Strategy proposal October 21. 2014
European Hearing Instrument Manufacturers Association
”The PR Committee” was the forerunner to the EHIMA MDC. It was
established before 1998.
Hear-it was created as a result of a new strategy after the ”World
of Hearing” failure in Brussels.
In 2007 the MDC was created and a full time manager was
employed.
”Create awareness about hearing, hearing loss and
hearing solutions”
”We need to inform the public better”

Purpose from original CEO decision1999:
The alliance will have three primary tasks:
1.
2.
Users
3.
To gather information and facts about hearing
impairment and organise these facts in a manner
which will make it possible to use them efficiently and
fast, when necessary.
To take advantage of the alliance to lobby the primary
target groups to ensure the hard of hearing the best
possible treatment for their hearing loss.
To present the relevant facts and messages in a way
which will ensure the alliance as the primary
knowledge provider for the hard of hearing and other
primary target groups.
Hear-It AISBL will be the crux in the effort to improve the
general public’s knowledge of hearing loss and of the
benefits of hearing instrument treatment for the hearing
impaired and to society as such.

Hear-It annual general assembly: professionals + user associations
National:
Denmark 2000-2001: Agreement among government parties to cut subsidies by half. Proposal
withdrawn after lobby effort headed by Hear-It and supported by all relevant actors in Denmark.
Activity continued and all stakeholders signed ”12 points to strengthen the Danish Hearing Care
System”
Holland 2006: Multiparty agreement to cut subsidies by 2/3. Withdrawn after joint Hear-It-NVVS
action to interview and inform on Hear-It statistics health-spokespersons from all parties before
election and publish on Hear-it.org, in NVVS member magazine and as press releases. Action
repeated after election and proposal fell away.
EU (only monitoring):
◦ European Health Forum, Gastein, Oct 1-3. On the programme: ”Hearing loss: the neglected
European public health Challenge”
◦
MEP Heinz Becker has asked the EU Commission about adult screening programs
◦
EHIMA + BHAMA + BSHAA + action on hearing loss + Hearing link have fought hard against
proposals in North Staffordshire to cut NHS funding of HA for mild & moderate losses
◦
Monitoring of revision of medical device directive.


Bridget Shields study very well quoted – and in mainstream media.
Survey in Belgium showed that +80% of all major media carried the story
The 2014 UK Commission on Hearing Loss employ unreservedly the Bridget Shield methodology
and figures

EuroTrak very well quoted

Hearing awareness week (good Brussels coverage, MEP, AEA, EFHOH)
EuroTrak was modelled after MarkeTrak (BHI initiative) and has turned out to be almost the only
source of reliable data in many countries on hearing, treatment, satisfaction, usage etc.
As such, EuroTrak is the other of our 2 major assets.
European Hearing Instrument Manufacturers Association
Current MDC strategy
efforts in all 3 areas
Awareness – Hear-it
Lobbying/monitoring
PR/EuroTrak
Spending 2012: 640.000 euro
Spending 2012: 65.000 euro
Spending 2012: 80.000 euro
Spending 2013: 640.000 euro
Spending 2013: 65.000 euro
Spending 2013: 80.000 euro
The Hear-it site was
redesigned to focus mostly on
(first time) users and driving
them through the funnel
towards a decision to do
something about their hearing
loss
The spending focus on
monitoring activities/iniatives
within the EU (Brussels based
politics, administration and
NGO’s)
The spending is almost solely
focused on doing and
leveraging EuroTrak. EuroTrak
analysis is conducted biannually
The current cost/benefit level
has been benchmarked with
member company cost/benefit
from similar activities and
found to be competitive
Current annual spending 785.000 euro – 2009 spending approx. 925.000 euro

The Future MDC
Strategic choices
European Hearing Instrument Manufacturers Association
13
1.
2.
Close MDC, close Hear-it (awareness), close EU
monitoring, maintain EuroTrak – future budget approx.
80.000 euro per year.
Keep MDC, take Hear-it to next level, maintain
monitoring, maintain PR, MDC more efficient and
proactive on key issues – future budget status quo at
800.000 euro. Will require leveraging of internal
resources in each member company.

Public spending pressure
◦ Rehab
◦ Telehealth, teleaudiology
◦ Health Economy
Co-morbidities
◦ Depression, dementia, diabetes, cardiovascular, obesity, falls, kidney diseases, etc
◦ Integrated health care
WHO
◦ The gate initiative (global assistive technology ). Certain people see possible advantages of
”de-medicalizing” hearing aids, hoping they will become more accessible . Others argue
against, but the jury is still out
◦ Making health care accessible
Adult screening (see e.g. UK report: ”Commission on hearing loss: final report”)
European Hearing Instrument Manufacturers Association


We have important trends internationally that require a
common stance and intervention/recommendations from
our industry
Hear-it and EuroTrak are valuable assets which will create
value in a future strategy
European Hearing Instrument Manufacturers Association






Define/propose common stance on major topics based on analysis, external research, key
opinion leader networks, expert networks, for approval by the Board.
Participate in/influence relevant governing bodies/influencing bodies/users’ associations( e.g.
EFHOH)
Maintain and build alliances (patient associations, professional associations, senior associations
etc).
Communicate our ”common stance”, create dialogue, virtual networks, social media (based on
Hear-it platform), PR.
Continue to build awareness and purchase intention in a non-branded environment (Hear-it).
Strengths are: ”un-biased”, .org, long history.
Utilize Hear-it to create interactive platform to generate studies, opinions, PR, dialogue, linking
to KOL/expert/social media groups etc.

Budget – ”as is” (total common spending = via Hear-it,
HIMSA and EHIMA)
Agreement on mandate
MDC to become more active (leverage member
organisations)
European Hearing Instrument Manufacturers Association




The idea:
◦ Create awareness on the importance of early/preventive/routine hearing check
The goal
◦ More people realize to their hearing problem and take action
The means
◦ Curtis Alcock/Ida Institute: ”the three monkeys”
◦ Campaign to run on national hearing day (WHO: March 3rd)
◦ Leverage local associations and local EHIMA member organisations
◦ Simple off line/on line communication

Coincide with WHO’s International Ear Care Day
Strong desire from AEA and EFHOH

Program topic: ”Hearing loss: the neglected
European public health challenge”
“Hearing loss is the number one isolation factor for EU citizens. During our session
we aim to increase awareness about the reality of hearing loss in the eU (all ages,
and especially vulnerable patient groups, such as children and older populations)
and about the consequences for EU citizens and families.”
Thanks to ”Agir pour l’Audition” in France
EHIMA participate?
SH has urged AEA to participate
Future cooperation with ”Agir pour l’Audition”?
Other program topics: eHealth, teleHealth, breaking
down the health ”silos”

PSAPs are audio devices and must be tested according to EN
60065 which covers safety of audio, video and similar
equipment. This is mandatory for CE marking under the lowvoltage directive in the EU.
Part of the testing purpose is compliance with maximum
sound pressure level according to EN 50332. The limit of
sound pressure level is 100 dB
We don’t know whether the PSAPs that are available in Europe
today have been tested according to EN 60065 (probably not
because most of them exceed the 100 dB SPL).
How can EHIMA make sure they ARE tested?
And how can this be policed?

Depending on our decisions on these
”Awareness raising” issues, we have to
discuss the budget consequences
