Transcript ENVIRONMENTAL CONSERVATION IN HK

What does environmental
conservation mean?
It means

wise management of our environment,

BUT NOT stopping the use of natural
resources
Four aspects
1)
2)
Protection of natural habitats
Maintenance of the diversity of
organisms
3)
Effective use of natural resources
4)
Control of pollution
Conservation - Habitat Protection
The types of ecosystems in HK

Forests like Tai Po Kau Forest

Freshwater like Stream in North Lantau

Intertidal like Mai Po

Marine

Islands like Lantau and Lamma
Marine


Advantages:
Hong Kong has 80 hard coral species, at
least 59 of them can be found in Hoi Ha
Wan, which is comparable to the
Caribbean Sea(加勒比海)!
And there are 320 species of reef fishes
that can be found in Hong Kong waters.
Importance of marine







sources of beauty,
provide habitat for wildlife,
remove pollutants,
provide food control,
maintenance of biodiversity
Entertainment for people
Sources of drinking water
Problems

Pollution, over-exploitation, uncontrolled fishing,
reclamation due to coastal development have
probably played a part in destroying the ecosystem of
marine.

The current situation is a serious threat to marine
biodiversity in Hong Kong waters.

Some previously common food fishes are now almost
extinct here like Zebrafish

One scientific study using advanced modeling has
predicted that local waters are not far from
ecosystem collapse. We must not let this happen!
Solution
Stop water pollution
whether industrial or artificial
– Victoria Harbor
 Water Treatment Plant
 impose a “closed fishing season” and
“no-take” zones to allow fish stocks to
recover and reproduce undisturbed

Real case


In 2002, draft map of the proposed Soko
Islands Marine Park is prepared because the
waters of Soko are important habitats of
Chinese white dolphins and Finless porpoises,
and important fishery to reproduction and
nursery grounds.
However, the designation of the Marine Park
has never come to reality although the
Country and Marine Park Board endorsed the
proposal.

On 1st September 06 ,
China Light Power (CLP) has announced
its intention to construct a liquefied
natural gas (LNG) terminal on the South
Soko Island.
Protection of endangered
species in HK




Romer’s Tree Frog
(Philautusromeri)
(盧氏小樹蛙)
Chinese White Dolphin

Effective use of natural
resources




Nearly all energy consumed in Hong Kong
comes from fossil fuels
non-Renewable energy - exhaustible
major sources of air pollutants and carbon
dioxide lead to global warming, acid rain etc.
Water is one of the most important resources
in the world, we cannot live without water.
What can we do?
Green Use of electricity


Use alternating current electricity or
rechargeable batteries instead of disposable
ones. This saves your money as well as the
environment by reducing of solid-waste of
disposable batteries
Energy saving light bulbs consume less
electricity and produce less heat. They save
75% of electricity and are 10 times more
durable than ordinary ones.
Green Use of water


showering takes only half of water use
for bathing, and saves 67% of energy
Collect a load of clothes for washing
together
Green Travel



Use public transport, such as the
railway and buses, whenever possible to
save money as well as energy
Switch off the engines while waiting
Turn off the light and air-conditioner
when no use
Buy Green



Think twice before you buy! Before every
purchase, ask yourself
"Do I really need it?"
According to a survey, each person in Hong
Kong everyday throws 4 plastic bags away.
We should reduce to create the plastic bag,
as some of them may be non-biodegradable

Recycling of waste materials







Recycling bins set up by the Food ad
Environmental Hygiene Department
Blue for waste paper
Yellow for aluminium cans
Brown for plastic bottles
Bins for disposal of BBQ forks in country park
Recycling for rechargeable battery
Recycling for the carbon powder box of
printer
Why do we need to carry out
environmental conservation?
we want the way of development meet
the present needs while compromising
the needs for a good quality of life in our
future generation
=>To have sustainable development

Governments’ effort



Legislation and policies
Latest news - 'polluter pays' principle
Environmental levy on plastic shopping
bags proposed
0.5 cent per each plastic bag in some
large-scaled supermarkets
'polluter pays' principle
Environmental education
How can we do something to
contribute to environment?

As a resident
1.
1st R –
2.
3.
4.
, we can remember the "6 Rs of Environmental Protection"?
Reduce: Buy only what we really need – there is no waste to treat when there is nothing to begin with.
Reuse
2nd R –
: If an item is purchased but you do not want to bury it underneath the ground forever, you may resort to this R
to make the full use of the item or waste.
3rd R –
Recycle: This should be done for a broken object which cannot be reused.
Replace
4th R –
: This is to use environmental goods as much as possible. You may replace a napkin with a handkerchief,
or use public transport instead of private cars to reduce the damage to the earth.
5.
5th R –
Rethink: Think twice before an action – think about what kind of impact your action will do to the globe.
6.
6th R –
Redundant: Environmental protection is about actions.
Thoughts without actions are “redundant” to the work of
environmental protection.
