About Us



C-FOAM was officially sanctioned as a Research Cluster in
the School of Management of the University of Ottawa in
May 2005.
The C-FOAM mandate is to provide analysis of:
management, policy, strategic planning, as well as
innovation and governance systems related specifically to
the oceans, marine fisheries, and the aquaculture sector.
These sectors are significant to Canada for their domestic
contribution to coastal regions (Atlantic, Pacific and Arctic)
and for defining Canada's place in international fora on
oceans and marine natural resources governance and
science.

C-FOAM Well-managed Fisheries Project:
Defining Success in Fisheries Management
December 5-6, 2007
DMS7170
9h00/9:00am
‘Well-Managed Fisheries’ - Project objectives


General: identify best practices in fisheries management,
based on experience, and to summarize experience in a
form which is easily accessible to fishery managers
Specific:
– to provide a general definition of “well-managed fishery”
– to establish benchmarks for best practices and factors
contributing to success
– to review experience in well-managed fisheries and distill
successful management practices from these
– to foster a positive approach to solving fishery management
problems
February 5, 2008
Telfer Research Support Presentation
26
‘Well-Managed Fisheries’ - Principal steps

Review of publications (November 2007)
– (1) annotated bibliography
– (2) summary of published thoughts on best practices

Benchmarking workshop (December 2007)
– Informal, mainly Ottawa expertise (C-FOAM, DFO et al.)
– Define « well-managed »; checklist of best practices

Expert canvas (December 2007)
– Contact experienced people, seek their input (cases of successfully
managed fisheries, publications, ideas)

Symposium on best practices (August 2008)
– AFS Annual Meeting in Ottawa
– Case studies, compilations, summary
