Projectiles
RODNEY COLLEGE
Projectiles
 About projectile motion
 To the tune: “The Old
Folks at Home” by
Stephen Foster
 C is a comfortable key to
sing it in
RODNEY COLLEGE
Projectiles – verse 1
When a thing is thrown and it
zips off
It will chase a parabolic arc
We can do this with a gun or
ball
Or even Fido’s stick when in
the park
RODNEY COLLEGE
Projectiles - Chorus
Horizontally, its speed is
set
Of acceleration that way, it
is free
Vertically, everything that’s
not held up
Accelerates to earth, with
value “g”
RODNEY COLLEGE
Projectiles – verse 2
An object that’s not held up by
anything
Will plunge to earth like concrete
in free-fall
As well as that, in a horizontal
sense
There is no force that pushes it
at all
RODNEY COLLEGE
Projectiles - Chorus
Horizontally, its speed is
set
Of acceleration that way, it
is free
Vertically, everything that’s
not held up
Accelerates to earth, with
value “g”
RODNEY COLLEGE
Projectiles – verse 3
Projectiles are objects that are in
the air
Free from almost all external
force
We ignore all lift and thrust and
drag but we
Must include the vector, weight,
of course
RODNEY COLLEGE
Projectiles - Chorus
Horizontally, its speed is
set
Of acceleration that way, it
is free
Vertically, everything that’s
not held up
Accelerates to earth, with
value “g”
RODNEY COLLEGE
Projectiles – verse 4
To find the range of anything
that’s thrown about
We need to find the time until it
lands
The vertical velocity, when t is
nought
Combined with “g” will put it in
our hands
RODNEY COLLEGE
Projectiles - Chorus
Horizontally, its speed is
set
Of acceleration that way, it
is free
Vertically, everything that’s
not held up
Accelerates to earth, with
value “g”
RODNEY COLLEGE
Projectiles – verse 5
Finally, now we know our time of
flight
And the constant horizontal
speed
We can find the distance ‘til the
object drops
And thus we then have all the
stuff we need
RODNEY COLLEGE
Projectiles – Chorus (last time)
Horizontally, its speed is
set
Of acceleration that way, it
is free
Vertically, everything that’s
not held up
Accelerates to earth, with
value “g”

“One on f”
The Des Cartes optics formula
 This song helps students learn the Des Cartes
optics formula
 It also helps students understand the meaning and
importance of values for do, di and f when they are
both greater than and less than zero.
 There is still a line that I am not entirely happy with
but when I think of a better one, I’ll replace it. No
luck yet.
 The tune is “Daddy Sang Bass” by Carl Perkins
 F is a comfortable key to sing it in.
RODNEY COLLEGE
“One on f”
Pronunciation guide
Des Cartes = “Day Cart”
di = “die”
do = “dough”
RODNEY COLLEGE
One on f – verse 1
In optics old Des Cartes gave us
all a great head start
When he joined the three ideas:
f, di and do
To find the link was tough but
Des Cartes was good enough
He found reciprocals the way to
go

One on f – verse 2
There’s stuff we need to know:
What are f and di and do?
What they stand for we should keep
in mind
do for object’s range and di’s the
image’s – one word changed
f, the focal length I know you’ll find

For problems you can do, you’ll
be given any two
And then the missing one must
then be sought
The same denominator – will
make life better later

been taught

something ON which you
should seize

In this case do’s a hero – never
less than zero
That’s something on which we
can all rely

Quantum Physics Sea Shanty
 Zany Incongruity of

 Simple to sing
