Common Challenges
• Barriers to sharing relationship data.
• Attachment to existing contact management
solutions.
• Databases are seen as IT systems supporting
functions, not as infrastructure facilitating key
business processes.
• Insufficient buy-in for the CRM strategy from
the top.

Prerequisites for Success
• People-centric data management must be
championed by people at the top.
• All staff must understand and buy-in to the
overall benefits of sharing their professional
relationships.
• Training and data management policies must
be taken/adopted by all staff.
• Data management labor must be in the
budget.

Strategies for Success
• Educate. CRM can’t be deployed to
staff that don’t know what it is or why
they should adopt it.
• Aggregate. Develop a clearinghouse of
existing CRM stores and practices.
• Coordinate. Timing is everything. Roll
out CRM to organizational divisions as it
serves existing business plans.

Resources
• IdealWare.org - An overall excellent resource
for all things NPTech. In particular, look at
Paul Hagen’s excellent two part “In Search of
CRM” Series (Part1, Part 2) and Robert
Weiner’s “Ten Common Mistakes in Selecting
Donor Databases (And How to Avoid Them)”.
Look there for my upcoming article on Data
Integration in September.

Resouces (Cont’d)
• Techsoup.org - Compumentor’s great site has
plenty of articles on CRM in the Learning
Center, as well as good discussion in their
forums.
• Techcaferia.com - My website, with this
presentation and the Salesforce
Implementation Plan we’ve discussed (Plan,
Gantt Chart), plus lots of CRM commentary in
the Blog.
