“Standards as databases” – What is it?
Many standards consist in full or in part of “collection of
items”, e.g.
graphical symbols
- terms and definitions
- product properties
- reference data of all types
- classification systems
- codes (for various types of objects)
- units of measurements
- etc.

Needs of ISO committees
Explicit requirement raised by many ISO committees:
 Need for a database to support standards development
ISO/TC 37 (1989): Need for an ISO terminology database
June 2005: Approximately 15 TCs/SCs
June 2007: Over 40 TCs/SCs
Demand is further increasing
 Emerging approach to standards
development – Need for ISO to respond!

Why? – A few numbers
Terms & definitions: Around 180.000 – 200.000
Graphical symbols:

Around 4500 in ISO

Around 1000 in IEC
Codes: Over 100 standards in ISO
Challenge: Complexity – Difficult to be consistent!
 Database is a key tool to address this challenge

Key user requirements
Standards developers:
- Consistency of content
- Help in standards development
Standards users (industry, business, governments, etc):
- Standards as « documents » in paper/PDF is not enough!
ISO system (ISO members, ISO/CS):
- Timeliness, reliability of process
- New products and services, promotion of sales
General public:
- Better visibility of and access to the content of standards

ISO/CDB – Key functions
The repository for concepts in ISO
Access through a public information layer
Structured development process
Integration with existing IT infrastructure of ISO (e.g.
role-based access control – ISO/GD, balloting
systems etc.)
End user access: Public information layer,
subscription, download and API-access
(with webstore-integration)
Independent hosting by ISO members

Where do we stand today? (2009)
First prototype completed and tested (“search” and
“workflow”)
 Much feedback!
First official release: Read-only version containing

Terms and definitions (complete)

Graphical symbols (complete)

Codes (language, country, currency, script)
Roll-out of first release: 27 October 2009

Where do we want to go? (2010)
Roll-out of the maintenance workflow to production
Integration with ISO’s online sales system (“Webstore”)
Extended database procedure (development of projects from
scratch: NWIP  IS)
Product properties  Supply chain management
Quantities and units
Multilingual content
New services
Federated database (e.g. with the IEC): “One-stop-shop”
National hosting by ISO members
