The Cathedral Basilica
The Cathedral Basilica is dedicated
to the Assumption of the Blessed
Virgin Mar. It was consecrated in
1144. The original design was by
Italian architects and the project
was completed in 1563. In the
porch there is a contemporary copy
of the old Romanesque Door. The
Cathedral’s treasury shelters the
chalice with the paten and St.
Sigismund’s herm.
Narutowicza Square, the former
Canonical Marketplace
This is the former shopping area of the new
city established in 1237. The canon’s houses
have been located around it for ages. The
oldest of building houses the Płock
Scientific Society. The southwestern side
ends with the Bishop’s palace which was
converted into a court after World War II.
The remaining buildings have classical
features and date from 1837.
The Old Market
Since the medieval times, the old market has
served as a meeting place and the home to fresh
products. The gothic city hall that used to
stand in the middle of the market was replaced
with a new classical building in 1824 and was
expanded by neighboring tenement houses.
The former Hotel de Berlin is situated on the
south western side of the market and today
is known as Darmstadt Hosue. During the
period 1802-1894 German writer and
composer E.T.A. Hoffmann lived at this
famous landmark.
St.Baratholomew’s Parish Church
Originally this church was a big Gothic
parish church founded by King Casmir the
Great and erected after 1356. Since 1942, in
order to save the building, its main portion
was significantly decreased by pulling down
the facade and the towers from the Vistula
River side. The building gained a completely
new appearance. It was made smaller, was
shortened by half, was shorn of its chaples,
with its facade and entry.
The Garanaries
Płock used to be an impotant port located
on the Vistula River. Many garanaries stood
up at the edge of the slope. The last two of
them were adapted to the National Archive
and the Ethnographic Section to display
folk art and culture of the Mazovia Region.
The Monastery and the Cathedral
Complex of the Marian Friars
It is the main seat of the Old-catholic Church of
the Marian Friares established in 1893. The neogothic buildings of the cathedral and the
monastery were erected in 1914 according to the
design by Bishop Kowalski, an amateur architect.
The interior decorations also come from this era.
The Synagogue
A Jewish community lived in Płock as
early as the first half of 13 th century. At
the beginning of World War II, the Nazi
formed a ghetto there. In 1941, they
transported about 10,000 people to the
concetration camps. In 1942, the
Monument to 13 people killed and a
symbolic Peace Bell were put up in the
place of mass execution.
The Synagogue was renovated in 2011
and now it hosts The Museum of
Mazovian Jewish Community.
Tumska Street
This street was marked out as a route in a
new city plan after 1803. During the 19th
century it became the main shopping
center surrounded by tenement houses built
in different styles. The most interesting
houses include a part of the former English
Hotel with its neo-Gothic gate and Art
Nouveau tenement houses.
Mazovian Museum
The museum situated at 8 Tumska
Street was founded in 1820. It has the
most precious collection of Art
Nouveau. There you can admire the
most outstanding works of art from the
turn of the 19th century: paintings,
sculptures, silverware, glass and china.
The Warszawskie toll-gate
Each of the five toll-gate that lead to the
city had a different architectural shape. The
former Warsaw route has the most
impressive and the largest gates that were
built in the period 1816-1818 according to
the original classical design by Jakub
Kubicki.
Zoological Gardens
The Zoo was established in 1951 on
the picturesque terraces of the
Vistula River. There are 430 animal
species in the Zoo, including
Poland’s largest collection of
reptiles and amphibians.
The Pressure Tower
Location of the city caused its premanent
problems with water. The royal privilege to
build the first water supply system dates
from 1945. However, modern water supply
system with filtration and a water pressure
tower was built in 1892.
The Holy Trinity Hospital
It will soon celebrate its 600th anniversary. It was established in 1405 thanks to
the foundation of Duchess Alexandra, wife of Ziemowit, the Duke of Mazovia.
The hospital location has been changed many times. It has been situated on its
present site since 1836.
The City Library
This building was erected in 1902
for the Landowner’s Credit
Society, an important financial
institution at the turn of the 20th
century. Between the world wars
it was owned by nuns that ran a
school there. Today, it houses the
city library.
