Concept
Concept
Analysis has shown that the (many) functions that will be combined into
one building can easily be separated in a public and private part.
Also, the program can be seen on three levels, or scales:
- Site (big scale)
- Country house (medium scale)
- Dwelling (small scale)
Together with a goal set by the Holtveld Foundation, which is to
encourage living together whilst respect each others privacy, this can be
translated to a concept suited for this project.

Design principles
Design principles
-
Open up volume for light and sight
-
Keep the floor plan open (minimize use of walls)
-
Divide building in public and private
-
Use a subtle medium to make boundaries between public and
private use
-
Create interaction between inside and outside via lines of sight
Vision
Vision
- Massive volume as statement in the environment (like a rock
formation)
“Maison L”, pottgiesser arch., France
Vision
- Massive volume as statement in the environment (like a rock
formation)
- Open floor plan, with overlapping spaces for functions and
as little walls as necessary

- Using light and space as medium to give functions
boundaries and separate private from public
Hard boundary (direct light)
Soft boundary (diffuse light)

the lack of reference points

- Place the building on the line of sight and let
it cut through the volume
- Create three zones of nature: one pubic on
the west side, linked to the existing forest and
one more secluded forest linked to the east. A
neutral zone in between enforces the line of
sight and gives room for (vegetable) gardens

* The theme of separating public and private also translates to the plans
of the dwellings. Instead of a horizontal matter seen in the building
complex, this will take place in a vertical matter. Public functions will be
placed low in the building and the more private functions are placed
high. This creates a hierarchy within the building which is easy to
understand and creates a comfortable way of living.

Further investigation
- Windows of dwellings can be more functional so they can frame the surroundings
- Concept of light as boundary can be further investigated
- Building construction and materialization with respect to the durability
- Managers house (located on top of the workshop) has to be further designed (with
plans and interior renders)
