Monotheism Basics
• Monotheismthe belief in one
God, who
controls the
universe, the
lives of humans
and decides the
fate of their
souls.
Roots of Monotheism
• Several regions experimented with
monotheism in ancient times
• Sumerian Suenism
• Egyptian Atenism
Suenism*
• Suen was Moon God of
City of Ur in Sumeria
around 2000 BCE
• Abraham of Ur, patriarch
of Jews, Christians and
Muslims, would have
been familiar with
Suenism
• Beliefs could have given
root to Atenism during
Hebrew slavery in Egypt
Atenism*
• Founded as a reform movement
by Pharaoh Akhenaten of Egypt,
about 1353 BCE
– Nefertiti was his wife
– Tutankhamen his son
• One God (Aten) to replace
Egyptian pantheon
• Several interesting theories about
Atenism exist:
– Judaism evolved from Atenism
among Hebrew slaves
– Moses was taught about Atenism
by royal tutors
– No direct evidence to support
these theories at this time
•
O sole god, like
whom there is no
other! Thou didst
create the world
according to thy
desire, Whilst thou
wert alone: All
men, cattle, and
wild beasts,
Whatever is on
earth, going upon
(its) feet, And what
is on high, flying
with its wings. The
countries of Syria
and Nubia, the land
of Egypt, Thou
settest every man
in his place, Thou
suppliest their
necessities…
