law, reason and faith, and
duties of the individual by

Introduction:
• The moral and ethical principles of
Judaism and Christianity make of
the core of Western political
thought and have influenced the
ideas of democracy in many ways.
• The great debates over right and
wrong, over justice and injustice,
and over the place of the individual
in society and history are rooted
with what Greeks, Jews, and
Christians believed to be true of
human nature and human needs.

• Followers of Christianity believe in
one God
• They base their religion on the
teachings of Jesus Christ
• The Trinity: God the Father, God the
Son (Jesus Christ) and God the
Holy Spirit (God’s presence on
Earth)
• They believe that Jesus died for our
sins and rose from the dead.
• Christians call their holy book the
Bible.

• The goal of Christians is to
achieve salvation
• Three main sects:
– Roman Catholic
– Orthodox
– Protestant

• Jews: Followers of Judaism
• One God = Adonai in Hebrew
• God made a covenant with
Abraham that his desendants
would be God’s chosen people,
called Hebrews.

with dignity
– Equality of all individuals is
essential to democracy.
