TOPIC 3 THE ANCIENT MIDDLE EAST

NOMADIC PEOPLES
Pastoral Nomads domesticated animals and
traded goods among the different civilizations,
passing technology around
 Nomads were viewed as barbaric by civilizations
and would sometimes conquered in times of need
 Indo-Europeans used iron to turn themselves into
an empire as powerful as the Egyptians, but they
were eventually conquered by the ‘Sea Peoples’

PHOENICIANS
They developed a form of writing that was the
groundwork for our alphabet, that they used will
trading for contracts and records
 They became the greatest traders in the world
because they did not have a lot of natural
resources other than lumber

ISRAEL
Located just east of the fertile crescent
 King Solomon was the most powerful of all the
Hebrew kings after his death the Kingdom split
into two parts Kingdom of Israel in the north
and the Kingdom of Judah to the south
 Solomon built a magnificent temple in
Jerusalem

JUDAISM
Monotheistic religion that has Yahweh as their
god
 Jews have a covenant with god to follow the Ten
Commandments
 Prophets are on earth to relay the message of
Yahweh

ASSYRIAN EMPIRE
Developed a system of communication that had
post where men on horseback would take
messages back and forth
 Army was very powerful because it had fierce
warriors, chariots, and used a cavalry

PERSIAN EMPIRE
Cyrus was the first Persian ruler
 Darius divided the empire into 20 different
provinces called satrapies run by a governor
called a satrap
 They had a monotheistic religion called
Zoroastrianism that was started by Zoroaster
and there god was called Ahuramazda, the
teachings focused around good vs evil

PERSIAN EMPIRE
