The Legacy of Two Pharaohs
• Chapter 2 – Section 3 (Day 3)
• Objective: I can compare and contrast
the rule of King Tut and Akhenaton.
The Legacy of Akhenaton
• About 1370 B.C., Amenhotep IV came to the
throne.
– With the help of his wife, Nefertiti, Amenhotep
tried to lead Egypt in a new direction.
• In an attempt to maintain power, Amenhotep
introduced a new religion that did away with
the old gods and goddesses.
– Now, only one god named Aton (AH-tuhn) was
to be served
Resistance Among the People
• As you can imagine, priests resisted
these changes.
– Amenhotep punished the priest.
– He removed them from their position,
seized their lands, and closed the temples.
• Amenhotep then changes his name to
Akhenaton.
How The Egyptians Reacted
• To most Egyptians, Akhenaton’s
attacks on the gods seemed to be an
attack on Egypt itself.
– Egyptians refused to accept Aton as the
only god.
• Meanwhile, Akhenaton became so
devoted to the new religion that he
neglected his duties as pharaoh.
– Egypt lost most of its land from enemies
while Akhenaton was pharaoh.
The End of the New Kingdom
• During the 1200s B.C., pharaohs
wanted to make Egypt great again.
– The most effective pharaoh during this
time was Ramses II
– He reigned for 66 years
• During this time, Egyptian armies
regained lands in western Asia and
rebuilt the empire.
