The
Four Mountains
Of
Moses
Many mountains mentioned in Scripture
Number of significant events tied to mountains
Mt. Moriah (Gen. 22)
Mt. Ebal & Mt. Gerizim (Dt. 11)
Mt. of Temptation (Mt. 4)
Likewise, lives of some individuals tied to mountains
Moriah with Abraham & Isaac
Esau with Mt. Seir (Gen. 36)
Aaron with Mt. Hor (Num. 20)
Jesus with Mt. of Olives
Perhaps no life more tied to mountains than that of Moses
Four mountains in particular reveal the life of Moses to us
Mount Horeb
The Mountain of
Decision
Born under a decree
And the king of Egypt spake to the Hebrew
midwives, of which the name of the one was
Shiphrah, and the name of the other Puah: And he
said, When ye do the office of a midwife to the
Hebrew women, and see them upon the stools; if it
be a son, then ye shall kill him: but if it be a
daughter, then she shall live.
Exodus 1:15, 16
Born under a decree
Hidden in brink of the Nile
Discovered by Pharaoh’s daughter and saved
Brought up by his own mother; Reared in Pharaoh’s
house
And Pharaoh's daughter said to her, Go. And the
maid went and called the child's mother.
Exodus 2:8
Born under a decree
Hidden in brink of the Nile
Discovered by Pharaoh’s daughter and saved
Brought up by his own mother; Reared in Pharaoh’s
house
At age 40, made a life-changing decision (Ex. 2:1114)
Now when Pharaoh heard this thing, he sought to
slay Moses. But Moses fled from the face of Pharaoh,
and dwelt in the land of Midian: and he sat down by
a well.
Exodus 2:15
And Moses was learned in all the wisdom of the
Egyptians, and was mighty in words and in deeds.
And when he was full forty years old, it came into
his heart to visit his brethren the children of Israel.
And seeing one of them suffer wrong, he defended
him, and avenged him that was oppressed, and smote
the Egyptian:
Acts 7:22-24
By faith Moses, when he was come to years, refused to be
called the son of Pharaoh's daughter; Choosing rather to
suffer affliction with the people of God, than to enjoy the
pleasures of sin for a season; Esteeming the reproach of
Christ greater riches than the treasures in Egypt: for he
had respect unto the recompence of the reward. By faith
he forsook Egypt, not fearing the wrath of the king: for he
endured, as seeing him who is invisible.
Hebrews 11:24-27
In Midian he tended the flocks of Jethro and married
Jethro’s daughter, Zipporah
At the age of 80, while tending sheep at Mt. Horeb,
Moses saw a most unusual sight
Now Moses kept the flock of Jethro his father in law, the
priest of Midian: and he led the flock to the backside of
the desert, and came to the mountain of God, even to
Horeb. And the angel of the LORD appeared unto him in
a flame of fire out of the midst of a bush: and he looked,
and, behold, the bush burned with fire, and the bush was
not consumed.
Exodus 3:1, 2
Now Moses kept the flock of Jethro his father in law,
the priest of Midian: and he led the flock to the
backside of the desert, and came to the mountain of
God, even to Horeb.
Exodus 3:1
And when forty years were expired, there appeared
to him in the wilderness of mount Sinai an angel of
the Lord in a flame of fire in a bush.
Acts 7:30
In Midian he tended the flocks of Jethro and married
Jethro’s daughter, Zipporah
At the age of 80, while tending sheep at Mt. Horeb,
Moses saw a most unusual sight
Another life-changing decision had to be made; this
one with much greater implications
Moses offered a number of excuses
And Moses said unto God, Who am I, that I should
go unto Pharaoh, and that I should bring forth the
children of Israel out of Egypt?
Exodus 3:11
And Moses said unto God, Behold, when I come
unto the children of Israel, and shall say unto them,
The God of your fathers hath sent me unto you; and
they shall say to me, What is his name? what shall I
say unto them?
Exodus 3:13
And Moses answered and said, But, behold, they will
not believe me, nor hearken unto my voice: for they
will say, The LORD hath not appeared unto thee.
Exodus 4:1
And Moses said unto the LORD, O my Lord, I am
not eloquent, neither heretofore, nor since thou hast
spoken unto thy servant: but I am slow of speech,
and of a slow tongue.
Exodus 4:10
Moses offered a number of excuses
But, finally made the decision to obey God
And the LORD said unto Moses in Midian, Go,
return into Egypt: for all the men are dead which
sought thy life. And Moses took his wife and his
sons, and set them upon an ass, and he returned to
the land of Egypt: and Moses took the rod of God in
his hand.
Exodus 4:19, 20
Moses offered a number of excuses
But, finally made the decision to obey God
Like Moses, we must approach the Mountain of
Decision
Mount Sinai
The Mountain of
Law
God (through Moses) had led His people to freedom
from Egyptian tyranny
10 plagues had devastated Egypt
And Pharaoh's servants said unto him, How long
shall this man be a snare unto us? let the men go,
that they may serve the LORD their God: knowest
thou not yet that Egypt is destroyed?
Exodus 10:7
God (through Moses) had led His people to freedom
from Egyptian tyranny
10 plagues had devastated Egypt
Pharaoh and his hosts had drowned in the Red Sea
But overthrew Pharaoh and his host in the Red sea:
for his mercy endureth for ever.
Psalm 136:15
God (through Moses) had led His people to freedom
from Egyptian tyranny
10 plagues had devastated Egypt
Pharaoh and his hosts had drowned in the Red Sea
Israel now encamped at Mt. Sinai where stayed for
over a year
On third day, God called Moses to come up into the
mountain
And the LORD came down upon mount Sinai, on
the top of the mount: and the LORD called Moses
up to the top of the mount; and Moses went up.
Exodus 19:20
On third day, God called Moses to come up into the
mountain
While there, Moses was given instructions for
building the tabernacle, commanded to number the
people, and given the law of the covenant
The law was given for purposes of:
Showing sin for what it was
Wherefore the law is holy, and the commandment
holy, and just, and good. Was then that which is
good made death unto me? God forbid. But sin, that
it might appear sin, working death in me by that
which is good; that sin by the commandment might
become exceeding sinful.
Romans 7:12, 13
The law was given for purposes of:
Showing sin for what it was
Providing civil, sanitary and spiritual laws for the
Jewish people
Bringing its adherents to Christ
Wherefore the law was our schoolmaster to bring us
unto Christ, that we might be justified by faith.
Galatians 3:24
Like Moses, we too must approach the mountain of
law
Ours is the law of Christ, the New Testament
And for this cause he is the mediator of the new
testament, that by means of death, for the
redemption of the transgressions that were under the
first testament, they which are called might receive
the promise of eternal inheritance.
Hebrews 9:15
Mount Nebo
The Mountain of
Death
Fast-forward in the life of Moses
Wilderness wandering almost over
Moses was now 120 years old
The former generation (including his sister Miriam
and brother Aaron) had died- except for Caleb and
Joshua
Much had occurred along the way
Now, because of his disobedience in striking the
rock, Moses turned the reigns of leadership over to
Joshua and ascended Mt. Nebo
Here he would get a view of the promised land, but
would not be able to enter
Here he would face death
And Moses went up from the plains of Moab unto the
mountain of Nebo, to the top of Pisgah, that is over
against Jericho. And the LORD shewed him all the land….
So Moses the servant of the LORD died there in the land
of Moab, according to the word of the LORD…. And
Moses was an hundred and twenty years old when he
died: his eye was not dim, nor his natural force abated.
Deuteronomy 34:1, 5, 7
Like Moses, we too will one day approach the
mountain of death
Mount of
Transfiguration
The Mountain of
Glory
With man, the story would end with the mountain of
death; with God, it goes further
He is seen again in the New Testament, in the
lifetime of Jesus
And after six days Jesus taketh Peter, James, and
John his brother, and bringeth them up into an high
mountain apart, And was transfigured before them:
and his face did shine as the sun, and his raiment
was white as the light. And, behold, there appeared
unto them Moses and Elias talking with him. Then
answered Peter, and said unto Jesus, Lord, it is good
for us to be here: if thou wilt, let us make
here three
tabernacles; one for thee, and one for Moses, and
one for Elias. While he yet spake, behold, a bright
cloud overshadowed them: and behold a voice out of
the cloud, which said, This is my beloved Son, in
whom I am well pleased; hear ye him.
Matthew 7:1-5
With man, the story would end with the mountain of
death; with God, it goes further
He is seen again in the New Testament, in the
lifetime of Jesus
Peter recalled the significance of this event years later
For we have not followed cunningly devised fables, when
we made known unto you the power and coming of our
Lord Jesus Christ, but were eyewitnesses of his majesty.
For he received from God the Father honour and glory,
when there came such a voice to him from the excellent
glory, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.
And this voice which came from heaven we heard, when
we were with him in the holy mount.
II Peter 1:16-18
Moses could not enter the promised land in his
lifetime, but with Christ he was able to enter it
Through mount Calvary we, too, can enter the
mountain of glory
Like the story of Moses, our lives will not end at the
mountain of death
Moses came a long way from being set afloat in the Nile
River marshes
“And there arose not a prophet since in Israel like unto
Moses, whom the LORD knew face to face” (Dt. 34:10)
Moses eventually made it to the promised land
But, only through his association with Jesus
