What is Meteorology?
The study of the atmosphere,
weather and climate
The atmosphere is the air that surrounds the
earth - about 78% Nitrogen, 21% Oxygen and
other gasses like carbon dioxide and water
vapor.
Weather is the conditions of the atmosphere
at a given location for a short period of time.
It’s caused by the uneven heating of the
earth’s surface.
Climate is the average weather in an area,
from season to season and year to year.

Weather changes because of moving
An air mass is a large body of air with
similar temperature and moisture
properties throughout.

Air mass movement is determined by upper
air currents and prevailing winds.
Continental Polar - Cold, dry air
Originate over Canada
Maritime tropical - Warm and Moist
Originate over the warm waters of the
tropics and Gulf of Mexico.
Air Masses Affecting The United States
The boundary between 2 air masses
is called a front
Warm front symbol
Precipitation usually occurs as a
front moves through
Cold front symbol
Follow the directions on the sheet to get to the lesson on
fronts on WeatherNet
When the new, advancing air mass is composed of warm
air, this boundary is called a warm front
If the advancing air mass is composed of cold air, this
boundary is called a cold front.
Because of its weight, the air presses
down on us and exerts pressure.
Pressure systems (Highs and Lows)
usually move west to east across the U.S.
Low pressure systems bring rain.
High-pressure systems bring bright, sunny
days with calm weather.
A weather map shows how weather changes through
the movement of air masses and fronts
