PERIOD 1
• THE DEFINITION AND DYNAMICS OF PERSONALITY
DEVELOPMENT WHICH UNDERLIE AND GUIDE
PSYCHOANALYTIC PSYCHOTHERAPY.
• FIRST LAID OUT BY SIGMUND, PSYCHOANALYTIC
THEORY HAS UNDERGONE MANY REFINEMENTS SINCE
HIS WORK PSYCHOANALYTIC THEORY CAME TO FULL
PROMINENCE AS A CRITICAL FORCE IN THE LAST THIRD
OF THE TWENTIETH CENTURY AS PART OF THE FLOW OF
CRITICAL DISCOURSE AFTER THE 1960S.
• MANY OF THE CHARACTERS ARE
PLAGUED WITH PSYCHOLOGICAL
DISORDERS THAT ULTIMATELY LEAD TO
THEIR DEMISE.
THERE WAS A KINGDOM CALLED DENMARK, WHOSE
KING WAS MURDERED BY HIS BROTHER, CUNNINGLY.
HE CAME TO HIS SON, HAMLET, TO AVENGE HIS DEATH,
THUS, HAMLET WAS LEFT ALONE AND CRAZED.
HAMLET, ENRAGED, WITH A HEART TO DO SO,
SET FORTH TO COMMIT THE TRAGIC MURDERS OF THOSE
BOTH HATED AND LOVED; GAVE WAY TO
THE UNTIMELY DEATH OF ALL THOSE INVOLVED.
ACT III.IV.107-142
(pp. 177-178)
• Schizophrenia is a brain disorder that
affects the way a person acts, thinks, and
sees the world.
• MISCONCEPTIONS
• Schizophrenia refers to a "split
personality" or multiple personalities
• Schizophrenia is a rare condition.
• People with schizophrenia are dangerous.
• People with schizophrenia can’t be
helped.
• SYMPTOMS:
• Delusions,
• HALLUCINATIONS,
• disorganized speech
• disorganized behavior, and
• the so-called “negative” symptoms:
Hmm.. Hamlet does have schizophrenia
As evident, Hamlet is one of the only
characters who can see his father’s
ghost. Not only that, but he can also
communicate with him.
Given this, it is possible that Hamlet
has been having hallucinations
about his father, thus categorizing
him as a schizophrenic character.
ACT III.I.57-70
(pp. 123-125)
• Bipolar disorder (also known as manic
depression) causes serious shifts in
mood, energy, thinking, and behavior–
from the highs of mania on one extreme,
to the lows of depression on the other.
• MISCONCEPTIONS
• People with bipolar disorder can’t get
better or lead a normal life.
• People with bipolar disorder swing back
and forth between mania and depression.
• SYMPTOMS:
• Feeling hopeless, sad, or empty,
• Inability to experience pleasure.
• Feelings of worthlessness or guilt
• Thoughts of death or suicide
In the famous To Be or Not To Be
soliloquy that has been much
overused, lies Hamlet’s most
dramatic example of a bipolar
disorder. Hamlet has a dilemma
between living and dying, in
which he express many feelings
that back up his desire for each
thought. Hamlet has these
Feelings simultaneously, thus
categorizing him as bipolar.
ACT IV.V.196-205
(pp. 219)
ACT I.II.68-86
(pp. 26-27)
• a normal reaction to loss, life's struggles,
or an injured self-esteem.
SYMPTOMS
• Feelings of helplessness and
hopelessness
• Unexplained aches and pains
• Unusual preoccupation with death or
dying.
• Expressing strong feelings of
hopelessness or being trapped
AS IT IS MADE CLEAR BY HAMLET
HIMSELF, HIS MAIN CAUSE OF
DEPRESSION IS THE LOSS OF
HIS FATHER.
AS FOR OPHELIA, THE DEATH OF HER
FATHER IS ONE OF THE MAIN CAUSES OF
HER DEPRESSION. THIS IS ESPECIALLY
VISIBLE WHEN SHE SINGS THE SONG
THEN DISAPPEARS AND IS KNOWN TO BE
DROWNED IN THE SAME ACT AND SCENE
