General
concepts
Dr. Ali Farah
• psychotherapy is any psychological
technique designed to facilitate
positive changes in person’s
personality, behavior, or adjustment
– it takes many approaches.
• A systematized professional
technique whereby mental systems
can be eliminated, or disordered
behavior can be controlled
• The means to do this is an ongoing
structured relationship between a
trained physician or psychologist and
a patient.
• Though very effective, but the
personal relationships are none
professional ways of helping othersthese such like kindness, advise,
education, persuasion, counsel…etc
Theoretical considerations
• They are used in the treatment of
psychogenic disturbances, regardless
of whether they are neurosis,
psychosis, personality disorders,
psycho physiological, or drug abuse
Validity of psychotherapy
• does psychotherapy do what it
claims to do?
• some researchers holds that
psychotherapy is an effective
technique with a potential for making
the patient either better or worse
due to the way it has been used.
• Others showed that psycho
dynamically centered therapy is also
effective
The Patient
• The patient takes and respond to
psychotherapy because he suffers
psychological disturbances: i.e the
ability to cop with the problems of
life which become evident at work,
school, or home.
• The internal symptoms of this
suffering are anxiety, depression,
and/or emotional suffering
• The patient’s motivation to work at
psychotherapy as a way of recovering
from his illness is an important
determinant of the effectiveness of
psychotherapy.
• other determinants are: age, intelligence,
type and duration of the disorder, and
realty factors: family co operation,
demographic socio cultural factors
• for this reason it is important for the
therapist and the patient to
understand early in the treatment
the objectives of the treatment
The Therapist
• Successful therapists are
characterized by:
– None possessive warmth,
– genuineness,
– empathy,
– Good personal adjustment.
• Failure frequently occur with the
therapists who are:
– cold
– untrusted
– so affectionate or demonstrative to the
extend that they embrace, confuse, or
antagonize the patient.
• Therapists who exploit patients for their
own ends soon generate suspicions and
hostility rather than trust, and therpy does
not function without trust.
• Therapists with psychological problems of
their own may exaggerate or
unconsciously overlook similar problems in
their patient’s wellfare, or they may be
determinant to their patient’s wellfare
• likewise therapists who strive for
unrealistic goals for their patients
would generate disappointment and
failure
