What is Opositional
Defiant Disorder (ODD)?
 problems with: defiance, disobedience and
hostility toward authority figures
 last for at least six months.
 symptoms need to occur outside of a mood
disorder
 without psychotic features
 cause a disruption in school, social, and
work performance..
 exact cause is unknown.
 contributing factors are suspected to be
genetics, and family and social
conflict/injury.
Symptoms of ODD.
 often loses temper
 often argues with adults
 defies authority deliberately
 deliberately annoys people
 blames others for own mistakes
 is touchy, angry and resentful, spiteful and
vindictive.
Treatment.
 Medications are not usually indicated unless
another illness is present.
 This illness may co occur with depression,
ADHD, or anxiety disorders.
 Individual and family psychotherapy
