conversion disorder:
loss of a body function
after an emotional
event
Hypochondriasis:
always sick with
imaginary
illnesses
Dissociative Disorders –
experiencing an alteration in
memory, identity, or consciousness
dissociative
amnesia: inability
to recall
information after a
stressful event
somatoform
and
dissociative
disorders
dissociative fugue:
a person travels
away from home
and forgets their
past
dissociative identity
disorder: having 2 or
more distinct
personalities (multiple
personality disorder)
Somatoform Disorders
Hypochondriasis
• Frequent physical
complaints for which
medical doctors are
unable to locate the
cause.
• Often believe that
minor issues are
indicative are more
severe illnesses.
• Ex. headache =
tumor
Conversion Disorder
• Loss of physical
function after an
emotional event
• Ex. Your girlfriend
dumps you and you
suddenly go blind.
• There is no physical
reason for the loss
of function… only
psychological
Dissociative Disorders
• These disorders
involve a disruption
in the conscious
process.
• Three types….
Dissociative Amnesia
• A person cannot remember things with no
physiological basis for the disruption in
memory.
Dissociative Fugue
• People with dissociative amnesia that find
themselves in an unfamiliar environment.

• Used to be known as
Multiple Personality
Disorder.
• A person has 2 or
more distinct
personalities
• People with DID
commonly have a
history of childhood
abuse or trauma.
