The Endocrine
System
Nerves deliver messages electrically while
hormones deliver messages chemically.
Overview
Glands of the endocrine system secrete
hormones as chemical messengers
(hormones).
About 100 different hormones have been
identified.
The pituitary, pancreas, thyroid, adrenals,
and gonads are a few of the endocrine
glands.
Pituitary
The pituitary gland
is considered our
master gland, which
produces hormones
to direct growth and
sexual development.
Gonads
In females, the ovaries produce estrogen.
In males, the testes produce testosterone.
Adrenals
 Produce cortisol, which stimulates the body to
waken.
 Adrenaline and noradrenaline are produced and
affect the feelings of fear and anger.
Thyroid
Influences the
rate at which
we process
food and burn
fat.
Pancreas
Produces insulin and
glucagon, which regulate
sugar levels in the blood.
Insulin reduces the level
Glucagon raises the level.

Feedback loops
Feedback loops are chemical
messages that turn on (positive)
or off (negative) hormone
systems in order to maintain
homeostasis.
Function is like a thermostat
maintaining temperature.
Summary:
Write a paragraph explaining how the
nervous system responding to stimuli is
similar to the endocrine glands secreting
hormones in feedback loops.
Remember homeostasis (hint feedback loops).
