There are two main
categories of energy?
Potential Energy
is energy that is
stored and can be
used later.
Kinetic Energy is
the energy of
Motion.
There are 4 main types of
Potential Energy
(Nuclear will not be a part
of our class activities)
1. Gravitational Potential
Energy (Eg)
Eg is the stored energy in an
object due to its height or
position above the ground.
The ball has 100% stored
Eg at it’s highest point
before it starts to fall..
Eg is the stored energy
of the kids & sled.
Half way down the
hill they only have ½
of the Eg that they
had at the top of the
hill.
2. Elastic Potential
Energy Eel
Elastic energy is stored energy
when an object is stretched or
compressed. This could be
rubber bands, springs, or elastic
materials.
3) Chemical Potential
Energy Ech
Chemical Energy occurs when
a chemical substance
undergoes a change in its
molecular structure.

There are 5 main
types of Kinetic
Energy Ek
1. Mechanical (Em) The
motion of a moving object
that is large enough to be
seen by the human eye.
Kinetic Energy (EK) also
occurs at the
microscopic level. The
movement is too small
to see, but it is still
Kinetic Energy.
2. Thermal Energy (Eth)
The internal energy of a
system, which results from
the random movements of
its atoms and molecules.
Fire and friction are
two of the main
sources of Eth.
3. Electrical Energy (Ee)
Electrical Energy results
from the movement of
electrons in an atom.
We can’t see the
electrical energy
(Ee) in circuits…but
we can observe
Electrical Energy
that occurs as static
electricity in
lightning!
4. Light Energy (El)
Light energy is the
motion of photons
of light through
space in the form of
waves. Also known
as Electro-magnetic
Energy.
5. Sound Energy (Es)
Sound energy is produced by
vibrations when waves of
energy move through
matter.

An Energy Transformation
occurs when one type of
energy is changed into
another type of energy.
Energy Transfers occurs when
*Energy is moved from one
object (or system) to another or
*There is a flow of heat through
an object.
What are the

transfers with
Humpty Dumpty?
Eg 
Humpty Dumpty
has stored Eg
when he is sitting
on top of the wall.
Eg  Em
The Eg is
transformed into
Em as he falls.
Eg  Em  Eth & Es
(From friction)
Finally, the Em is
transferred to the
ground as thermal
energy (friction)
when he lands.
What are the energy

transfers with the archer?
Em  EEL
The Arrow has some Eg all the time, but it does not seem to
be changed into any other energy.
The archer transfers
elastic potential
energy to the bow
when it is pulled back.
Em  EEL Em
When the bow is
released, the energy is
transferred to the
arrow and transformed
into Em.
Em  Eel  Em  Eth & Es
Finally, the arrow transfers
the energy to the target
where it hits & becomes
Thermal Energy due to
friction and sound is given
off.

Space Shuttle?

The space shuttle
rocket has stored
Chemical PE in its
fuel as it sits on
the launch pad.

The burning fuel is
transformed into
Thermal Energy and
that pushes against
the ground.

Thermal Energy is
transformed into
Kinetic Energy as
the rocket lifts off.

Kinetic Energy is
transformed into
Eg as the rocket
climbs into the sky.
