Changing Energy Forms
How can energy change?
• Energy
– The ability to cause
change or to do work
Two forms of energy
• Kinetic
– energy due to
movement
• Potential
– Energy of resting
objects
Other forms of energy
• Chemical – stored in chemical bonds (ex- leaf)
• Mechanical – energy due to movement or position (ex –
lever lifting a load)
• Nuclear – energy from nuclear reactions (ex - sun)
• Thermal – energy of heat (ex – YOU think of something
that gets hot!)
• Electrical – energy due to the movement of electrons
(electricity) (ex – YOU think of an item that uses
electricity)
• Geothermal – energy from the earth (ex – a geyser)
• Radiant – energy given off by another object (ex – a
space heater gives off thermal energy to the room)
Energy Changes
• Conservation of energy –
– Energy is never created or destroyed it just
changes form
Electricity and Magnetism
• Electric current – is the flow of electric
charge in a material
• Electric circuit – closed path along which a
current can flow
