Transcript Types of Energy

Potential
PE
• NRG due to the position
Ex:
P.E.= height X mass X gravity
Think of gravity
as a force of
approximately 10
m/s2
Kinetic Energy
KE
• Energy due to motion of matter
• ½(Mass X Speed2)
Better known as ½mv2 where v stands for
velocity(speed)
Speed = d/t
Remember…
all forms of energy are either kinetic
or potential
Thermal Energy
(Heat NRG)
• Definition: motion of particles in a substance
(measured by temperature)
• Examples: hot tub, ice, cement, all matter
• **Friction produces thermal NRG***
Mechanical NRG
• Definition: the energy of motion that is put to work
 Force must be applied
Examples:
• wind (air particles)
• riding bike,
• skateboarding
Gravitational
NRG
• Definition: Energy due to objects height,
mass, & gravity.
• Examples: marble top of ramp,
• Water behind a dam
• skydiving
What did one goldfish say to the other when they
ran into a brick wall?
Elastic NRG
• Definition: Energy stored in objects by
applying force (push or pull).
• Examples: bungee jumping, wind up toys; and
trampoline, slingshot – Popsicle Sticks
Radiant (Light)
Definition: Energy that travels in
electro-magnetic wave motion
Examples: light, X rays, radio waves, sun
Chemical
Energy
Definition: Energy stored in the bonds of
molecules. Chemical Reaction
required!!!
• Examples: biomass (wood), fossil fuels (oil),
batteries, living organisms-plants/animals
Electrical
Energy
Definition: The movement of electrons,
usually thru a wire.
• Examples:
• lightning
• Any electric
appliances
Magnetic….
Sound Energy
Definition: Movement of energy
through longitudinal (push-pull)
waves; vibration of air particles.
Examples: music, speaking, noisetree falling in
forest…
Nuclear Energy
Definition: Energy stored in the nucleus of
an atom.
• Example:
• fission-nuclear power plants
bombs
• fusion-energy produced in sun

First and last name
Draw the lab set up: marble, ramp, ½ cup
Label as many forms of energy as you can.
Point to exactly where they are in your
picture.
**Hint: more than 2 less than 9…
Pretend the toy
car is a ½ cup…
O.A.
Categorize Forms NRG into TYPES of
NRG
Make a chart with 2 columns: Kinetic & Potential
Sort the forms of energy into the two TYPES of energy
electrical, sound, gravitational,
nuclear, chemical, motion,
thermal, radiant, mechanical,
elastic

1) 5 grams ball moving 2 meter/sec
10 grams ball moving 2 meter/sec
2) 10 kilograms of sugar going 5 meter/sec
5 kilograms of water going 5 meter/sec
3) 5 kg of sugar traveling 5 meter/sec
5 kg of sugar traveling 10 meters/sec
4) 12 kg bowling ball going 3 meter/sec
12 kg brick going 3 meter/sec
5) 5 kg bag of marbles moving 8 meter/sec
8 kg bag of marbles moving 5 meter/sec
6) 3 kg cat at 5 meter/sec
2 kg cat at 6 meter/sec
For each
pair,
decide
which
has the
most
energy
and
why….
