The 10 Types of Energy
What do you know?

Name as many sources of energy as
you can identify in this room.
Essential Questions
Why is energy so important?
 What are some of the pros and cons of
the different energy sources?
 How can combining the various energy
sources help provide us with efficient
sources of energy?

Potential and Kinetic Energy

All energy sources can be described as
potential and kinetic.
 Potential energy – stored energy, or energy
that can be kept and used at a later time
 Kinetic energy – energy in motion – the
energy is contained in the movement of the
object or movement inside the object
The 10 Types of Energy
Kinetic – energy is
motion (ex- a ball
moving)
 Gravitational energy –
energy due to the force
of gravity (ex- ball held
above the ground and
dropped
 Spring energy - objects
that can be straightened
and then return to their
shape later (ex- spring)

Electrical energy –
energy made available
by the flow of electric
charge through a
conductor (ex- electricity
and static cling)
 Magnetic energy – a
magnetic field that
contains energy (exmagnetic and a
compass)
 Mechanical energy –
energy of motion of
objects (ex- scissors
opening and closing and
clicking a computer
mouse

The 10 Types of Energy


Heat energy –
sensible and latent
energy – energy given
of by temperature or a
change in state (exhot water and steam)
Nuclear energy –
fission and fusion when atoms are
broken apart or fused
together (ex- heavy
water)


Light energy – energy
produced by the
frequencies of
radiation (ex- x-ray,
solar, and
microwaves)
Chemical energy –
chemical compounds
composed of atoms
that form chemical
bonds (ex- batteries,
oil, and gunpowder)

Exploration Time – Your Task


To further explore the 10 types of energy, you
will be assigned a source to research and
create a poster presentation to present to the
class.
You should include the following items:
 Definition of your energy source.
 Give three examples with images of your energy
source.
 How is your energy source currently being used?
 Be creative and think of a way you could use this
energy source that is not already being used.

Time Limit – 3 days for research and
preparation and 1 day to present
