THE NATURE
OF ENERGY
Energy Is the Ability
to Do Work
Work involves motion
Is this
guy
working?
Why is he sweating?
Work happens when a
force moves an object
over a distance!
Who is working?
Potential
Kinetic
Stored energy (the
potential to do work is
there but not seen)
Energy in
motion
The amount of mass and velocity
there is determines how much
Kinetic Energy there is

Kinetic Energy = mass x velocity

Mechanical Energy
•energy that is possessed by an object
due to its motion or due to its position
Ex. A moving car possesses mechanical energy due to its
motion
Ex. A barbell lifted high above a weightlifter's head
possesses mechanical energy due to its vertical position
above the ground
•can be either kinetic energy (energy of
motion) or potential energy (stored
energy of position)
Mechanical Energy is defined
as the Ability to Do Work
An object that possesses mechanical energy is
able to do work. In fact, mechanical energy is
often defined as the ability to do work. Any
object that possesses mechanical energy whether it is in the form of potential energy
or kinetic energy - is able to do work. That is,
its mechanical energy enables that object to
apply a force to another object in order to
cause it to be moved.
Comes from moving electrical
charges in the atom (electrons)
Seen as power lines, batteries,
lightening, and static electricity
Potential energy that is
stored as chemical bonds
holding together chemical
compounds
Examples are chemical
batteries, candles (wax), and
food in our bodies

ve
Travels in waves
Is a combination of magnetic
and electrical waves
Examples include light,
microwaves, x-rays, radiation, and
radio waves

Heat or Thermal
Comes from energy inside atoms
and molecules
As the atoms or molecules move
faster, the thermal energy increases
Can be Kinetic or Potential

Energy stored in the nucleus of an atom
Results when the nucleus splits or joins
with another nucleus
Can happen naturally, from a star, or
manmade, from a nuclear power plant

Energy can be transformed from
1 form to another, especially
from potential to kinetic
Examples include:
The electrical energy from a power line
causes a motor to run which creates
wind, which travels in waves
A wax candle creates heat which travels
in waves and can turn a fan
