Phonics Screening Check
• Phonics screening was brought in by the Government after a
pilot in 2011
• It is a statutory test. Children in Year 1 must take part in
the screening.
• Children who did not meet the pass mark in Year 1 will take
it in Year 2.
• The screening takes place for a week in June.
• It is a list of 40 words and non-words (pseudo).
• The pass mark is not released until Monday 29th June.
Example of the
Screening
• We call the words with no
pictures real words and they
make sense
• We call the non-words (pseudo
words) – alien words. They sound
silly and are the alien’s name.
Phonics at Westminster.
At Westminster we monitor the teaching of
phonics and the progress all the children
are making.
Miss Barlow regularly conducts a mock
Phonics Screening Check with Year 1 and
Year 2 children.
What can you do to help?
• Encourage your child to sound out the
phonemes (sounds) in a word
• Digraph – cow, coat, rain
• Trigraph – night
• Split vowel digraph - time
• Please remember that phonics is not the only
strategy needed to become a fluent reader.
• Continue to segment and blend words.
• Re-read words or the sentence to make sure it
makes sense.
• Use pictures for clues to aid reading.
• Ask questions and talk about what has been read.
• ENJOY!!!!!
Before you leave please see Miss
Barlow or Miss Hope about how your
child has progressed in Phonics and
what you can do at home to help them
with the Phonics Screening Check.
The Phonics Screening Check is only
in a few days. Please practise at
home!
