Phonics and Spelling
A suffix is a word part that is added
to the end of a root word.
 When a suffix is added, a new word
with a different meaning is made.




words and makes them easier to

Theme: Comprehension: Review





The theme is the main message, or point,
of a story.
Sometimes a writer states the theme
directly.
Other times, the reader must figure out
the theme by thinking about the story and
the characters.
You should pay attention to the main
problem of the plot.
The way a character solves his or her
problem can be a clue to the theme of a
story.

Turn to page 74 of your Student Edition.
Review “Brave Measuring Worm.”
Name some of the important characters.
Two bear cubs, Mother Grizzly Bear, Measuring
Worm, Mountain Lion, Red-tailed Hawk
Identify the main problem of the plot.
The cubs are stuck on top of a mountain, and no
one can rescue them.
Explain how the problem is solved.
Measuring Worm climbs the mountain and leads
the bear cubs back down.
Remember that the main events in a story make
up the story’s plot.

Use the information we just identified
about the characters and plot of
“Brave Measuring Worm” to
determine its theme.
 You never know who will be the real
hero or the bravest.

