SYSTEMATIC SEQUENTIAL
PHONICS THEY USE
PURPOSE
• Word Wall and Making Words helps
struggling students learn to decode and
spell words and use that knowledge as
they read and write
THANK YOU!
• Dr. Karen Erickson met with Lana
Drawbaugh and Rena Carney and taught
us how to customize Systematic

CONCEPTS
I Making words: Phonics Lessons
II Word Families: Rimes/Keywords
III Word Walls
Content is appropriate for all
students. Strategies for adapting
content for ESE students will be
taught.
You do it!
CONCEPT 1: MAKING WORDS
• Use letter cards to make words
• 140 structured lessons that follow a typical
phonics scope and sequence
• With ESE students, keep words to 3 letters
and one vowel
Make your tool. Sherry Chuhay will give us pointers!
Lana demonstrate Lesson 1

MAKING WORDS
Lessons are arranged in 5 lesson cycles
• 1- 4 Lessons: making words
– Students are given 5-10 letters to make 10-12 words as well as a
secret word, which can be made using all the letters
– Once words are made, students sort words into common
patterns
5th Lesson: reviews words and adds words to word wall
6th Lesson: starts out with teacher calling out word wall
words for students to chant, write and check, thus
providing a daily review
Practice Lesson 1 with a partner (page 9)
STUDENT’S WRITE!
6th Lesson: starts out with teacher calling out
word wall words for students to chant,
write and check, thus providing a daily
review
Alternate pencils!!!!!!!!!
WAIT A MINUTE!
What words do you use for ESE word wall?
Children get very confused with blends,
digraphs, r-controlled vowels
CONCEPT 2: RIMES/KEY WORDS
CHOOSING WORDS FOR ESE STUDENTS
• 3 Letter words with one vowel
• Use high frequency words-see resources
• Use rimes/personalized key words
planning form in planning word wall words
WORD FAMILIES (RIMES)
”Word families (also known as phonograms or "chunks") help students "crack
the code" of our inconsistent language by providing predictable patterns
within words.
Here's an example: I see the word, "C-H-A-L-K ". Now, how can I figure out
how to say/read that word? Try breaking it into chunks that are
familiar. What words look like "chalk"? There’s "walk" and "talk", so
maybe "chalk" rhymes with those words. I know that "ch" has it's own
sound, so if I add it to the "alk" chunk, I get "chalk." That's it--"chalk."
We break words into chunks naturally, and we can teach our students to do the
same. Once your students become familiar with the 37 most familiar
chunks, they can use them to decode 500 words. (Wylie & Durrell, 1970)”

CONCEPT 3: WORD WALL
• Display high frequency words on the
classroom wall
• Provide daily practice
• Require that these words be spelled
correctly
WORD WALLS
Words are displayed on the word wall under the letter of the alphabet
with which they begin

CONCEPT 3: WORD WALL
• Practice lesson 5 with your partner
• Review steps 1 through 5 (page 13).
• Students are given a take home word wall
each week-see resources
• Starred words have the same rhyming
patterns

Every ‘Making Words’ lesson has 3 steps:
1.
Students manipulate letters
2.
Students sort words according to patterns
–
3.
Word cards are placed in pocket chart and the teacher guides
the students in sorting the words with the same beginning
letters, rhyming words and related words
Help the students use the words to read two new words.
