finding a word in the dictionary
There are over
171,476 words in the english dictionary!!
It would be very hard if the dictionary didn’t help us out by giving
us
GUIDE WORDS!
let’s review
Guide words: Located at the top of each dictionary page. These
are the first and last word on the page.
All other words will fall in between those two guide
words!
IF YOU KNOW THE ALPHABET...
LOOKING UP WORDS IN THE
DICTIONARY IT GOING TO BE A PIECE
OF CAKE!!
Let’s say we want to look up the
word
“STRONG”
Step 1: We would turn to the “S” section of the dictionary
Step 2: we would flip through the “s” section and try to find the
guide words that strong falls in between.
We use the second letter to guide us, if both of the guide
words have an “ST” we then go to the third letter!
LET’S TAKE A CLOSER LOOK!
Alphabetical order
Before we continue with the guide words, let’s practice putting
words in alphabetical order!!
If each word starts with a different letter, it is super easy! But,
think about what if the words all start with same letter...
Apple, animal, ape, automobile, alarm
Apple, animal, ape, automobile, alarm
If all the words start with the same letter, we look at the second
letter
If by chance the words have the same second letter, you
move on to the third letter!!
Talk with your partner and see if you can come up with a list on
your slate that puts those words in ABC order!
ALARM, ANIMAL, APE, APPLE, AUTOMOBILE
On your own...
Put these words in alphabetical order:
enter,
elephant, ear, exciting, eraser
Hopefully you said...
elephant, enter, eraser, exciting
