HISTORICAL WORDS IN
ENGLISH PUBLICISTIC
DISCOURSE AND THE
PROBLEM OF THEIR
TRANSLATION INTO
UKRAINIAN

-The theme is relevant as such a type
of obsolete words refers to the distinct
language elements, which are unknown
for other cultures.
-Historical words have no synonyms,
which would be useful for making
accurate and understandable translation.
-The objective of the diploma paper is to
investigate the problems of historical words in
publicistic discourse and to define the ways of
their translation.
-The theoretical significance of the
research is the identification of the challenges
which translator has while working with the
text, and the methods and ways of solving
these problems.
-Passive vocabulary – is a part of the
language vocabulary, which includes
words that have limited use in everyday
communication.
-Historical words, as the part of the
passive vocabulary – are obsolete
words which came out of use in
connection with the disappearance of
the realia they denoted.
-Publicistic discourse – is one
of the functional styles of the
literary language which is used in
the media.
-Also it is - emotive, elevated
language with the elements of
volitional assessment.
-Newspaper and journalistic style has
both conservative and mobility. On the one
hand, publicistic speech is characterized by
the use of stamps and other terms. On the
other hand, the urge to convince the
readers requires all new linguistic resources
to affect them.
-There are not only articles in the
newspaper texts, but also interviews,
biographies, reviews and other. And
that's why the using of historical
words in some publications is
essential, because they can denote the
specific term or fact, or even strength
expressive and emotional coloring.
-During the analysis of historical words,
which were found in British newspapers and
magazines such as "The Times", "BBC
News", "The Guardian", "The New York
Times", etc., it was found that most of all it
is possible to find the historical words of
such subject matter as medieval social
status (25,8%), elements of clothes (18,6%),
the state and the nation (13,5%), weapons
(10,2%), military and political ranks (5%),
religion (3,4%) and other.
Today’s Tsar may start the next Crimean War.
-In this sentence we can observe the historical word
“tsar”, which is used to designate certain European
Slavic monarchs or supreme rulers.
-Its subject matter is the title and political rank.
-Along with the direct meaning, this word has the
meaning of precedence and domination.
-The historical word has been translated with the help
of transcription.
-In this sentence the obsolete word denotes not only a
particular term, but also has a comic shade in the
modern society.
A boy became a squire at the age of 15.
In this sentence we can observe the historical word
“squire”, which is the shield bearer
or armour bearer of a knight in the medieval
Europe.
-Its subject matter is the social rank.
-It also means a person who has its own land.
-The historical word has been translated with the
help of analog.
-In this sentence the obsolete word denotes a
particular term of the historical past.
-Historical words being realia, often
exist only in one language.
-This type of obsolete words has been
translated with the help of
transliteration, transcription and
descriptive translation, which
allowed keeping the main essence of
the word.
-There were some obsolete words,
which exist in both languages, and
these words represent the smallest
problem, because they can be
translated with the help of the
equivalent.
-The method of the translation by the
analog was used for the successful
transferring of the historical words
into Ukrainian.
-The translator has to render the atmosphere,
emotion and the information potential that
is inherent in the original. Most faithful
translation strategy is "golden mean", a
mixture of all the methods.
-The skillful use of historical words are not
harmful and just necessary, irreplaceable,
invaluable in translating old texts, because it is an
essential means of artistic influence and an
important arsenal of expressing meaning.
