October 5th – 9th, 2015
Dates to save:
• October 5th: Picture Retake Day
• October 6th: Field Trip to Kelley Farm (Send
a cold lunch with your child)
• October 7th: Fall fundraiser ends
• October 8th, 12th, 13th: Conferences
• October 29th: Fundraiser items can be
picked up
Field Trip:
• Our first field trip is on Tuesday this week.
• There will be NO lunches provided by the
cafeteria – please send a cold lunch, a
drink, and an additional snack.
• Remember to send your child in
comfortable clothes that can get dirty.
• If it is going to be cold, please remember
to send something warm to wear.
Conferences:
• Conferences are October 8th, 12th, and 13th.
• Please return the slip that I sent home regarding your
scheduled time.
• Let me know if the date/time does not work for you – we’ll
look for a new time!
• The additional slip should be returned this week as well –
it will help guide our conferences.
• I look forward to meeting with each of you!
Box Top Collection:
• This past week information regarding Box Top
Collections went home.
• Let me know if you have questions 
• Remember to put them in groups that are
easy to count.
• This runs October 1st – 14th
Volunteering
• The media center is also looking for
volunteers to help shelve books.
• In the past, some parents have volunteered in the library
right before coming to our room to volunteer.
• Thank you for ALL your help!
• We couldn’t do it without you!!!

Field Trip Volunteers
• Thank you to those who were able to sign
up to volunteer for the field trip.

Reading : Week 3
• Main Story: Curious George at School
• Word Wall Words: do find funny sing no they
• Comprehension Strategy: sequence of events;
monitoring reading and clarifying questions
• Phonics: short vowel o; consonants l, x; inflection –
s (vc, cvc)
• Grammar: action verbs
• Writing: Using labels in their pictures;
writing sentences; capitalization, punctuation
Spelling
• Spelling Words:
–log dot top hot lot ox *do *they
*these words are both spelling words and word wall words
• We also write a sentence with some of these
words in them in addition to words that follow the
short a pattern.
• Be sure to practice other words that have a short
o sound so he/she will be prepared for this part
of the test.
• Math Concepts for this week in class:
Number Grids, Numbers All Around, Compliments of 10,
Labels for Numbers, Clocks
• Anticipated Homework:
 Monday: 2.1 Telephone Numbers
 Tuesday: 2.2 Counting Up and Back
 Wednesday: No homework
 Thursday: 2.3 Two-Fisted Penny Addition
 Friday: 2.4 Numbers Before and After

• Things you can practice at home if you are looking for
additional ideas:
-Identify and write numbers 1-20 (encourage them to
write them without reversals)
-Count by 1's, 5's, 10's
-Count backwards from 20-1
-Count from 1-130.
-Calendar (Days of the week. Months of the Year. What is the date? What will
tomorrow be… etc.
-Weather (What do you wear when it’s 80 degrees, what
do you wear when it’s 30 degrees.
- More or Less (What number comes before 13?
What number comes after 26?)
Extra:
Word of the Week
• Each week, your child can receive a
sticker for their sticker book by writing
down our special word/phrase of the week
along with a parent signature.
• They love stickers!
• Phrase of the week: Kelley Farm
General Homework Expectations
• Mondays: Spelling words and word wall words will come home
(practice these words to be ready for the spelling test on Friday
• Wednesdays: Wednesday work: students complete the
comprehension page as well as practice reading the words on the
opposite side. When you feel your child is confident in knowing the
words and has completed the comprehension page, please return it
to the classroom. It is due by the following Tuesday at the latest.
• Monday through Friday: Math homework will be sent home each
day, except Wednesdays. I expect each page to come back the
following day.
