Learning Objective
• Today we will use dictionary entries and
sentence context to determine the correct
meaning of a multiple meaning word.
Using Dictionary Entries
• Remember that context clues are the other
words in a sentence that help you find the
meaning of an unknown word.
• Today we are going to use the context clues
and a dictionary entry to decide the meaning
of a multiple meaning word.
Importance
• Being able to use a dictionary to find the
meaning of a word is a great study skill for the
future.
• Multiple-meaning words are on the FCAT
• You already multiple-meaning words everyday!
Multiple-Meaning Words in Action
• Multiple meaning words have different
meanings depending on the context of the
sentence they are in.
• Example:
My favorite season is fall.
Watch your step so you don’t fall.
The meaning of the word fall is different in each
sentence.
