High Mobile User Expectations
Enormous shift in user expectations in recent years driven by the richness of
user experience with iPhone apps and Google’s Android OS.

Proliferation of Devices and
Operating Systems
Mobile Content
In 2009, for the first time ever, mobile phones were used more for accessing
data than to make calls.
Global Mobile Data Market Update 2009,
Chetan Sharma released 4/1/2010
By 2013, mobile phones will overtake PCs as the most common Web
access device worldwide.

Emerging Mobile Resources
for Libraries
• OverDrive Media Console for e-books, audiobooks, music
and video
• Project Gutenberg
• Ebscohost Mobile
• Safari Books Online
• Gale Cengage Learning (AccessMyLibrary)
• NoveList Plus Mobile
• WilsonWeb Mobile
• Alexander Street Press
Some Challenges To Consider
• Depending on content, maintaining a mobile presence feels at times like maintaining two websites.
• With every new mobile OS and device there’s a bit of a delay before it is available. Boopsie must
develop and test new versions before making them available for the public.
• Database and E-book vendors will need to work closely with libraries to continue integrating content
for a mobile presence. Mobile Site vs. Mobile App.
• User expectations run high concerning social networking and on the go transactions. This includes the
ability to comment, rate, tag, and create lists, etc.
Very cool app
by Sanmateo
I love being able to find books and put holds on the run. The predictive search is also very nice.
I do wish that I could add to (and view) my saved for later list that appears on the website. This is
especially useful on the phone since I often hear about a book or movie that I'd like to see but don't want
to immediately hold or isn't available for hold yet.
I agree with the other reviewers that giving a confirmation on actions like canceling a hold is very
important.
Mobile
≠
Desktop
Transactional, goal-oriented
Browsing, researching, reading
On-the-go, changing context
Office, home, library – typically static
Speed – a second matters!
Speed not important (within reason)
Small screens
Large, vibrant, beautiful screens
Small keyboards
Fast, efficient typing of large info
Network constraints
Lots of bandwidth (typically)
Culture of texting
Culture of ‘letter writing’ (well, almost)
Thank you!
