The prostate is both a gland and a muscle
Functions of the PROSTATE (Muscular Gland)
• It works in concert with the
bladder muscles to control urine
flow
• Its muscular function expels
seminal fluids during ejaculation
• It produces fluids which
lubricate the urethra, increase
sperm mobility, and transport
sperm through the urethra
The cellular tissue of the Prostate
and the Uterus are similar and are
very sensitive to hormonal changes

As the prostate enlarges, it compresses the
urethra, slowing up the urinary flow.
Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia
• Affects 60% of men from the age of 40 to 59
• By age 80 … 90% of men have problems
The Symptoms of BPH
• Having to strain to start urination
• A weak urination stream
• Frequent urination
• Night-time urination
• Urgent urination signals
• Dribbling after urination is complete
• When BPH is severe, often the bladder does
not empty properly, and this can cause a man
to be more prone to bladder and kidney
infections

2. Alpha Blockers: (Hytrin, Cardura, Flomax, Uroxatral) … relaxes the smooth muscle in the
prostate, thereby, reducing the stranglehold the muscle has on the urethra
Side Effects:
* can cause a large drop in blood pressure resulting in fainting
* dizziness, lightheadedness, blurred vision
* heart palpitations
* weakness, tiredness, fatigue, falling asleep (instructions = caution when driving)
* impotence
* nasal congestion, difficulty in breathing
* urinary tract infections
