Transcript The Middle Ages

Warm-up: Wednesday
Describe 2 factors that led to the end of the
Middle Ages in Europe.
The Middle Ages
Contributions Today
Magna Carta
“Great Charter”
- Granted rights to nobles; eventually extended
to all citizens
- The king must obey the law
Universities
● University existed not solely for the purpose of teaching,
but also to facilitate research and debate;
● curriculum covered both religious and secular subjects
● Medieval European universities typically offered degrees
in four disciplines: theology, law, medicine, and “letters”
(i.e., liberal arts).
Lower-case Writing
● Ancient and early medieval scripts, whether
based on the Roman or Greek alphabet,
were written in all-capital letters and in one
continuous, unbroken stream of characters.
● The Carolingian Miniscule, developed
sometime in the 9th century, was an
innovative script that introduced lower-case
letters and spaces between words, as well
as uniform, rounded characters that were
more legible.

Playing Cards
● Early examples of cards can be traced to India, Persia, and Egypt but most
experts agree that playing cards originated in China
● Early decks had no Queens, which reflected the fact that courts were maledominated. Early decks had a King and 2 ‘Marshalls’, but no Queen.
● Even today Italian, Spanish, and German cards have a variation of the 3 male
court cards. The exception is the French design, which does have a Queen.
● The common red and black suit color scheme that we know today was
invented in France.
Robin Hood
● The medieval Robin Hood did not rob the rich
and give to the poor.
● The charitable Robin who gave to poor
peasants was a later invention.
