Three-Part Body
 Insects have a three-part body which
consists of a head, thorax, and
abdomen.
 This means that the ant is an insect.
Is it an Insect?
Arthropods
 Insects are arthropods, meaning they
have a chitinous exoskeleton.
 Even with the exoskeleton, the crab is
not classified as an insect. The crab is a
crustacean.
Is this an Insect?
Six Legs
 All insects have three pairs of jointed
legs.
 The spider has eight legs. This means it
is not an insect. A spider is an arachnid.
Is it an Insect?
Two Antennae
 Insects have two antennae which they
use for sensing.
 Yes, a bee is an insect. The bee has a
three-part body, six legs, and
antennae.

It’s a bug! Right?
 The “Lady Bug” or Coccinellidae is
related to a beetle.
 They have antenna, six legs, and a
hard shell that covers their wings.
 Yes, a Lady bug is an insect!

 Insects have compound eyes.
 Compound eyes help them to view
very large angles.
