Systems Theory
By

What is the systems theory?

The theory of the abstract organization of
phenomena, independent of their substance,
type, or spatial or temporal scale of existence. It
investigates both the principles common to all
complex entities, and the (usually mathematical)
models which can be used to describe them.
Systems theory relies on underlying principles
which can be applied to any situation.
Main Points
•
•
Look at systems in holistic ways
Analytical and Systems approach
-Analytical
-Systems
•
•
Analogous to Micro and Macro ID
Three mains concepts: input, output,
and process
Main People

Ludwing von Bertalanffy


He is the biologist who proposed the General
Systems theory in the 1940's.
General Systems theory
General properties of all systems/fields
 Complexity can be dealt with
 Goes beyond superficial comparisons

How It Relates to ID in General

ID focuses on the arrangement of and
relationships between the parts, which
connect them into a whole. ID also has
three basic functions: input, process, and
output, which are the main concepts of the
System theory.
Relationship to Dick & Carey

Dick and Carey is a systematic approach
to Instructional Design. The Dick & Carey
model breaks ID down into each element
then approaches the system as a whole
and considers the interactions of the
elements. Systems theory considers
underlying principles; Dick & Carey
considers underlying goals and objectives
of Instructional Design.

Something NEW, Something DIFFERENT

Systems theory can be applied to any subject or
situation. The same systematic approach that is
applied in one situation, for example, world
history, can also be applied to video tape
production. Underlying principles in world
history can be used to predict future interactions
between countries. According to
http://www.lionlmb.org/quad/theory.html,
systems theory governed the development of
video recording equipment.
