Course Description

All units will be approximately 5 weeks long
•
Each unit will study- Geography, History and Culture of the region- 2 weeks or
more.
Grading:
– Points- Count as 70% of the nine weeks grade.

Each Unit will have a project based learning session with a driving question- 2
weeks
Each Unit will have 3 quizzes and one major test.
There may be reading quizzes to check on your homework on day an assignment is
due.
Daily work points- this counts as 30% of the nine week grade.

Study Guide- You will have sections of reading which will be done mainly in class.
Collage- counts as homework and will be included in Daily Work Points.
If you are absent you are responsible for all missed work as homework outside of

Day #1- Reminders
• Today’s Date is on the power point in
front.
• On the day you return to school from
an absence, pick up your makeup work
from the yellow makeup box in the
back of the room.
• Write your assignments in what ever
planner mode you wish to use.
• Make sure you have your IPad and all
materials with you when you come to
class you will not be allowed to go back
to your locker to get anything.
Day #1 – Daily Requirements
•
This class will adhere to the school IPad policy. However we will
have class rules as well.
1. IPAD’s are turned off at the beginning of every class and placed under
the desk- Until instructed to turn them on for class.
2. Eliminate the bottom bar first thing and keep the IPAD face down till
you are told to turn it on or use it.
3. When using the IPAD it must be flat on the desk for the instructor to
see.
4. No Face book, email, twitter or social network to be used in class,
IPAD is for instructional purposes only.
5. Other rules will apply as they come to the front.
• You must have a three ring binder as your folder. All
papers, homework, etc. must be kept in this binder.
• You must have a notebook of some kind or loose paper also
to be kept in your three ring binder.
• You must have a place for assignments- either an Ipad App
or on paper in your three ring binder. This counts as daily
work and you will receive points for it from time to time. It
will be checked.
Day #1 Setting up the IPad for Social Studies.
• Turn on your IPad.
• Clear your bottom panel- double click and push and
hold one icon till it jiggles then press x to eliminate
from bottom panel. Do to all icons.
• Go to the Waverly Shell Rock Homepagehttp://www.waverly-shellrock.k12.ia.us/
• Click on Campus
• Click on Senior High School
• Put Cursor on Information tab- Arrow down and Click
on Departments
• Click on Social Studies
• Click on World History- Mr. Cook
• Add this page to your Home Screen- you may need to
re-label it.
Canvas
• Put this app on your Ipad- YOU MAY ALREADY
HAVE IT.
• Go to Google and type in this website at the top
of the page, then Add this page to your Home
Screen- you may need to re-label it as Canvas
– Wsr.instructure.com
• You will be able to use your own separate user
name and password. Enter your user name and
password.
• This web site may have Calendars,
• This web site will have Reading Quizzes and
possible small graded assignments.
• We may use Canvas more as the year goes on.
Canvas Testing
• All Tests must be taken in this classroom under
supervision during the class period.
• The IPad must remain flat on the desk during testing.
• Be very careful with your tap, accidental taps or
passes will count and you may miss the question.
• All cell phones must be on the desk, turned off and
turned face down during the test. Use of the
cellphone during testing will be regarded as cheating
and subject to failure.
• Taking pictures with IPad of the test will be regarded
as cheating and subject to failure.
• Leaving the test to visit another app before finishing
the test will be regarded as cheating and subject to
failure.
• If you miss the test due to absence or late work, you
must come into 214 during study hall or before school
to make it up.
Quick Office HD
• Put this app on your IPad. You may already have
this.
• Go to your IPad and open the Self Service App.
• Down load (Redeem) the Quick Office HD App.
• This web site has the following applications
– File Manager
– Holiday Budget manager
– Quickpoint- This is like Power Point, you may use it
or power point. Remember that most all projects will
be power point and maybe shown in class using Apple
TV- Air Play.
– Quick Word- word processing- notes, etc. This
maybe a great thing for in class notes and projects.
Remember Homework will be hand written.-

Folder
• We are going to make a folder for all
Social Studies Apps.
• Go to your IPad and push and hold a social
studies app. Release once all the apps
begin to jiggle.
• Drag one social studies app on top of
another and a file will appear on the
screen.
• Re-Name the file- World History
• While the apps are still jiggling drag all
Social Studies apps into this folder. Push
the home button to stop the jiggling.

Cell Phone and Electronic Devices

Cell Phone
Keep your cell phone out of site at all times. If I hear it or see
it I will confiscate it.
CELL PHONES Policy- as found in the student handbook
1. Students will be allowed to carry their cell phones with them
to class but cell phones may not be heard or used during class
periods.
2. Cell phones may be used between class periods in the hallways
and during the lunch periods.
3. Cell phones may not be used in classrooms, study halls, locker
rooms, or restrooms.
4. Cell phone use may not be used as an excuse for tardiness to
a class.
5. A student in violation of the cell phone policy will receive
three (3) detentions, a parent notification of the policy violation,
and the student will need to pick up the device at the high
school office at the end of their school day.
ELECTRONIC DEVICES
Electronic devices such as I-pods, blackberries, portables (DVD,
cassette, or radio) headset and other such devices and the use
of, are prohibited in this classroom. Check the student handbook
for violations and consequences.
