THE RUDIMENTS OF
OBSERVATIONAL LEARNING
OBSERVATIONAL LEARNING
(BANDURA)
 Also called Social Learning
 Modeling: process of observing and imitating a
specific behavior.
 Mirror Neurons: frontal lobe neurons that fire when
performing certain actions or when observing
another doing so. The brain’s mirroring of another’s
action my enable imitation and empathy.
EFFECTS OF SOCIAL LEARNING
 Prosocial Effects: just as Gandhi or MLK
 Antisocial Effects: Violence and TV
-In the US homicide rates doubled between 1957 and
1974, just when the TV was introduced and spreading.
-White South Africans were introduced to TV in 1975. A
similar near doubling of the homicide rate began after
1975.
-Elementary schoolchildren with heavy exposure to media
violence also tend to get into more fights.
