WWII AMERICA INVOLVEMENT

America neutral so that he could invade England.

War Production Board (WPB)
• American factories produced and enormous amount
of weaponry (guns and planes). The WPB halted
manufacturing of passengers cars and
shifted those materials to producing war items.
Smith-Connally Anti-Strike Act.
• It authorized the federal government to take control
of certain business. Washington took control of the coal
mines and, railroads. The majority of American workers were
committed to the war effort.

With the draft of Americans, Immigrants were brought
from Mexico (1942) called braceros to harvest fruit and
grain from the West.

Nearly 216,000 women were enlisted in the armed forces.

Minorities in WWII
• 1.6 million blacks left the south to seek jobs in the war plants
in the North.
• A. Philip Randolph led a massive negro march to
Washington in demand of equal opportunities for blacks in
this time of war.
– The Fair Employment Practices Commission (FEPC)
forbade the discrimination of minorities.
• About 25,000 Native Americans served in the armed forces.

• The war did not affect Americans greatly, they were not in the
middle of fire.

• May 1942 naval battle fought in the Coral Sea.
America & Australia against Japan.
• On June 1942 Japan retreated after loosing 4
carriers; Admiral Chester Nimitz directed a small
skillful invasion against Japan.
• Midway was the turning point of the Pacific war.

Island Hopping
• The Americans were “leapfrogging” to Tokyo;
they were capturing nearly islands, setting up
airfields on the, . And then neutralizing the nee,y
base though heavy bombing.
• Admiral Chester Nimitz coordinated the effort of

• Hitler’s main naval vessels were the U-Boats;
allies used bombs from boats to sink the
submarines.

• President Roosevelt wanted to take France
back, they devised a plant to go upwards from
North Africa.
• The invasion was the mightiest waterborne up to
history; Germany/Italy were trapped in tunisia
(may 1943)
Italy falls
• January 1943 Roosevelt & Churchill meet at
Casablanca. They agreed on steeping up their
Pacific war strategy, they invaded Sicily;
Mussolini surrendered in September 1943.
• Germany refused to surrender Italy over to the
Allies. They massacred Italian civilians that
surrendered.
• On May 2, 1945 thousand of Italian soldiers
became POW.
