Dropping bombs
over London.
I can see and hear the
German planes flying
over. They are going to
bomb London. I was
wondering how the
people in London felt?

How did people keep
safe from the bombing during the war?
What would the pilot
see from his plane?
He saw fires and smoke
and big search lights..
The buildings had been
destroyed. I think he was
taking photographs back
to Germany.

Many schools had bomb
shelters but school
work didn’t stop.

I was safe. There wasn’t
much room.

Underground bomb
shelters in London.
It was much bigger than
the school shelter. People
went to stay in it because
they were scared of the
bombs. When they heard
the siren they would run
to the shelter.

Food rationing began just after war broke out.
People had to be careful so there was enough food to
go around.
Later other things like clothes had to be rationed.
People were encouraged to grow vegetables
and mend their clothes.
Some rationing continued in Britain until June 1954
.
Gas masks
The girls have to wear gas
masks even when they are out
playing in case there was a
gas attack.
I would not like to wear one. It
would be heavy and smelly

The home guard
They did valuable work.
They defended key
targets like factories,
beaches and sea fronts.
At night they patrolled
fields looking for enemy
gliders or paratroopers.
Jamie and Dean
