How Do We Engage Technology
Students?
+
Engage Students in App
Development
 Upon completion of the App, URI will allow students, faculty and IT
personnel to build “Plug-ins” that will extend the features of the App

Parties will be granted the ability to build new plug-ins to tie into the
existing main Open Framework.

MobiLaurus or URI will be contracted to review all new plug-in submissions
on which submissions, if any, shall be included in a new version of the App

Case Study: MIT’s OpenCourseWare
“The Mission of MIT is to advance knowledge and educate students in science,
technology, and other areas of scholarship that will best serve the nation and the
world in the 21st century“
MIT built their OpenCourseWare (OCW) platform that
provides open access to course material and development
projects
URI can extend this experience to be the first university with
an “Open” App.
Students and faculty to take part in the subsequent
improvement of the App
+
Buy vs. Build
Universities are already burdened with
software management

Maintaining 3 mobile platforms will
typically require 10-12 hours per platform,
per month

Most universities would have to spend
roughly $30k per year to update, manage,
upkeep and service mobile platforms given
adequate expertise
