Unit III - Cells
Learning Goal One
Describe the cell theory and how it
relates to the nature of science.
Scientists and the Cell Theory
• Robert Hooke (1665)
Used an early microscope to view a thin
slice of cork.
Coined the term cells
because the
chambers reminded
him of cells in a
monastery.
• Anton van
Leeuwenhoek
Observed living cells
around the same time
in pond water.
Was amazed to see
things moving around.
Called them “wee
beasties”.
• Robert Brown (1828)
Observed that cells had
nuclei.
• Theodore
Schwann(1839)
German biologist.
Stated that all animals
are made of cells.
• Matthias Schleiden
(1838)
German botanist
Concluded that all
plants are made of
cells.
• Rudolf Virchow
(1855)
Observed cells
dividing.
Concluded that cells
could only come from
other cells.
Cell Theory
1. All living things are made of cells.
2. Cells are the basic unit of structure and
function in living things.
3. Cells come from pre-existing cells.
Cell Theory and the Nature of
Science
• Research
• Many scientists over many years collecting
evidence.
• Technology
• As technology improves theories may be
strengthened or modified in light of new
evidence.
