CELL DIVISION
Function of Cell Division
Mitosis & Cytokinesis
CELL CYCLE
cells alternate
between stages of
dividing and not
dividing
 cell cycle shows the
sequence of events
between each cell
division
 cell cycle shows the
different stages of
development that a
cell goes through

INTERPHASE
cell prepares for cell division
 increases in cell size
 increases genetic material
 DNA in the chromatin duplicates

MITOSIS
process where
the nucleus in
the cell forms
two identical
nuclei in the
original cell
 process by
which nuclear
material is
divided during
cell division

PROPHASE
packing of
chromatin into short
and thick
chromosomes
 nuclear membrane
and nucleoli
disappear
 centrioles split and
migrate to poles
(only in animal
cells)
 spindle fibers attach
to centromere of

PROPHASE
METAPHASE

spindle fibers pull double
stranded chromosomes to the
middle of the cell
ANAPHASE
centromeres pull apart when
spindle fibers contract and shorten
 single stranded chromosomes move
away from middle towards opposite
poles

TELOPHASE
total set of chromosomes at each pole
 spindle fibers disappear
 two nuclear membranes and two nucleolus form
 single stranded chromosomes transform (uncoil)
into chromatin

CELL DIVISION & CYTOKINESIS
Cell Division
 refers to the actual splitting of a cell into two
halves called daughter cells
Cytokinesis
 separation of cytoplasm
 separation of organelles into equal parts
 formation of two daughter cells
 occurs at the same time as telophase
CYTOKINESIS IN ANIMAL CELLS

cell membrane pinches in from the edges forming
a cleavage furrow
CYTOKINESIS IN PLANT CELLS

new cell wall forms between the 2 daughter cells
forming a cell plate
