Structure of Coatomer (COPI) Cage Proteins
by Changwook Lee
• Key word
Beautiful research work by means of structural protein crystallography, ho
wever, this work can be done by using general 3rd generation synchrotron
sources.
We should try to find much more suitable scientific application for protein
crystallography by means of XFELO.

Time-Resolved Studies with XFELO
by Hyotcherl Ihee
• Key word
For pump-probe X-ray diffraction (scattering), XFELO may be comparabl
e to or even better than XFEL. (as far as a MHz optical laser that provide
s comparable energy per pulse with a typical 1 kHz femtosecond laser sy
stem. But it may be for “soft matter”. ).
Characteristics

High repetition rate
(high flux)
Yes or No
We need to develop the laser system with MH
z high power CW operation for soft matter. Fo
r hard materials lower value of pulse duration
will be okay. 0.5 MHz and several hundred W
CW laser will be developed soon by mean of fi
ber laser system.
Longitudinal coherence
Narrow band width
(meV)
Yes
At the case of diffraction work, it is not needed,
however, is there any interesting research field,
such as time resolved inelastic scattering?

Discussion and Perspectives
• With all the “prominent” characteristics available from XFELO, a
“new” group of users can be drawn into the “community”.
• The characteristics available from “seeded XFEL” should be
carefully compared.
– “single shot” vs “continuous (?) pulse” (in terms of stability)
– advantages of narrow BW with stability and higher rep. rate
• Any other possible experiments?
