Cell Notes
Cell Theory
1. All living things are made of cells.
2. Cells are made by other cells.
2 Types of Cells
• Prokaryotic Cells –have no nucleus
(Bacteria)
• Eukaryotic Cells – Cells that have a
nucleus.
(plants, animals, fungi, & protists)
Nucleus – holds the DNA in the
center of the cell
Eukaryotic Cells viewed with a
microscope
Organelles
Organelles – like organs in your body, these
small parts of the cell do all the jobs for the cell
Nucleus
• Controls all of the functions of a
cell using DNA
• It is in the center of
the cell.
Cytoplasm
• The jelly like substance that
fills the cell it holds
everything
in place.
Cell Membrane
• Covers and protects the cell.
Decides what enters and leaves
the cell.
Mitochondria
• Breaks down your food to make
energy.
Ribosomes
• Makes proteins.
Endoplasmic Reticulum
E.R.
• Transports (carries) things in a cell.
• Folds proteins to finish them.
Lysosomes
• Break down waste (garbage).
Golgi Bodies
• Packages protein made by ribosomes
Plant cells also contain:
• Cell Walls
• Chloroplasts
• Large Vacuoles
Plant Cells: Cell Wall
• Cell Wall surrounds cell and
protects it. Makes a plant cell
hard and straight.
Chloroplasts
• Used in photosynthesis to make
food for the plant. Makes the
plant green.
Vacuoles
• Stores water. Plants have bigger
vacuoles than animal cells do.
