Comprehensive local optic network
 Secured connections all
over in Kainuu area.
 Important also as a
backbone for present
broadband connections
like Wimax or ADSL.
 Kaisanet has engaged
itself to maintain
present broadband
technologies.

Optic fiber vs. mobile
 Both are needed.
 Also a link tower has an optic fibre.
 Are not quadrated with each other:
 Optic fibre is for a “heavy use” of the
Internet, like IPTV and HDTV, network
games, interaction connections etc.
 Mobile connection provides a mobility
 Data limit with mobile, e.g. Sonera has
two level, Basic connection 3Gbps and
Power connection 20 Gbps.

Some recommendations for the fibre
 Single. mode fibre, standards ITU-T G.652.D or G.657.A (if
also fills G.652.D)
 Broad wave length area, possibility to use CWDM-systems (many light
wave lengths in a same fibre
 Compatible with other G.652-serie fibres.
 SC or LC connectors.
 Cabling passive and with open access.
 Full star –topology, but remember cable manufacturers!

Some technical issues
 From a regional fibre network to homes two possibilities:
 Active Ethernet or Passive Optical Network (PON)
 Ethernet is a quite cheap technology.
 Three topologies:
 Full star
 Active star
 Passive optical network
 Open Access: both active and passive systems are available
 Cable-TV will stay long

Tecnical issues
 In one area in Kajaani there was a heated and insulated
distribution cabinet as a fibre hub tested first time, instead
of a bigger installation, all active equipment (like fibre
switch) were installed into that cabinet (so called Erja
Cabinet).
 The price if the cabinet is only one fourth of a bigger
installation, and it doesn’t need any kind of building permit
to install that.
 Our experiences have been very good and we have decided
to continue with this concept.

Technical issues 2
 In all areas a connection to a home distributor from the
backbone cable will be distributed via a hub with active
fibre switch (Kajaani and Vuokatti).
 At the homes fibres have been terminated to fibre terminal
with RJ-45 connections for Internet and VoIP and RF
connection for the Cable Television.
 The traffic in the building can be distributed wireless or with
wire if there is at least Cat5 cabling in the building.
 Due to our technology the maximum is today 100 Mbps.

Technical issues 3
 In one area in Vuokatti also TeliaSonera Finland done their
cabling, but obviously they don’t have any customers yet.
 In Hyrynsalmi in 2010 we used first time GPON technology
with passive distributors and now we are collecting
experiences also here TSF put their optic cable, but again,
without any devices
 In Hyrynsalmi RF signal is not available, same in the future in
all rural areas
 IPTV

Internal network
 The connection from the
building distributor belongs to
the housing cooperative
 The network in an apartment
belongs to the owner of the
apartment.
 Operators’ responsibility finish
at the building distributor

Internal network
 Cabling in an one family house and in an apartment in a
bloch house is similar:
 Four port in Inteno terminal = 4 rooms + WLAN
 A starlike cabling from a terminal
 RJ-45 connections should be placed beside the electricity.

About pricing
 Ordinary price 766,23 €
 A fibre connection includes a fibre terminal, ownership
of which will belong to a customer.
 A customer will buy an IPTV set-up box and probably
also a wireless keyboards.
 Kaisanet can do all internal network building, 59 € per
hour, incl. taxes.
 Household reduction in personal taxing

Broadband 2015
 One fibre per house.
 Readiness to all buildings, including leisure time buildings,
fibre to joint boxes, no long hanks on the ground.
 Address management is very difficult, due to that that areas
are not defined according to postal codes.
 Who is to tell the price to people?
 Own digging is possible only on the own land, how about the
public road?

Broadband to all 2015 2
 According to The Finnish Transport the forest clearing
combined to the fibre ploughing belongs to the operator
 If the road is not ready the ploughing has to be done on the forest side
of the road (e.g. asphalted).
 How to set a price of the connection to an ordinary
customer?
 Network planning by communities in the broadband for all
vs. network planning by professionals
 An optimal network in whole Kainuu area.

Services are the main issue!
 Fast and steady broadband
 IPTV and TV-card
 Tele presence via fibre





Health services by public and private sectors
Social networking in villages
Work at home
Leisure time living and working
Connections to relatives around the world etc.
 Lähiverkkokauppa – own local netstore, will start in February

Services are the main issue! 2
 Instead of technical issues we should speak about services
 Fighting against migration in Kainuu with the help of fibre
connections.
 Kainuu could be a test bed for new health services provided
via a symmetric broadband connection.
 100 Mbps Card in progress
 To support decision making in communities
 To change focus to services.
 Coordinator is needed for different projects.
