Controversial Views on ICT vs. Sustainability
 ICT has been regarded as part of the problem
 Polluting the environment with e-waste and harmful
substances
 Accelerating climate change by increasing the carbon
footprint from growing aggregate ICT-related energyconsumption
 Inspiring new usage scenarios that lack social responsibility
 ICT has always provided business- and economic benefit by
increased productivity and process-efficiency
 Overall productivity of most industrial production factors
depends on enablement by ICT
 Management processes in business and economy are relying
on transparency that are enabled by ICT
 But quantification of cost and benefit of ICT in relation to
sustainability has been vague

 In recent years this discussion has been dominated by
“Smart Topics”
 Direct potentials for power-grids / building-automation / trafficcontrol have been the focus, now moving to the more general
“Smart Cities”
 However, the ICT-related potentials to increase energy-efficiency
reach far beyond specific vertical application that might seem
immediately appealing
 Indirect effects by factor-substitution in business processes
(materials, travel, space) are significant, but do not constitute the
primary business case for innovation
 Unbiased assessment methodology to quantify effects
in projects is a prerequisite for rational decisions
 Management requires transparency
 Energy reporting is a prerequisite for identifying significance of
efficiency improvement potentials
