OptIPuter Chicago Infrastructure Goals
• Provide OptIPuter Dynamic Network Resources
– In Chicago, 30Gb between EVL, StarLight and NU
– 20Gb between StarLight and San Diego
– Engage groups in Canada, Europe, and Asia (e.g., last week)
• Support OptIPuter Protocol Development with
– Clusters with 1GE and 10GE NICS on each dual-processor PC
– Switches at EVL and StarLight enabling vLANs and LightPaths
• Support OptIPuter Applications Development
– By Procuring, Building, and Connecting OptIPuters
• Prototype “Next Generation” Technology and Techniques
– 30 Dual 64-bit Opterons, 100 Megapixel screen and 60 TB of Disk at EVL
– Varrier Automatic Stereo and PARIS Haptic Integration with OptIPuter

Year Two Accomplishments:
Towards Regional-Scale and National/International-Scale OptIPuters
•
UIC Installed a large E1200 Force10 10GE Electronic Switch and a
128x128 Calient Optical Switch at StarLight
– Connecting GE and 10GE Metro, Regional, National and International
Research Networks and Lightpaths
•
The Metro-Scale OptIPuter has been achieved:
– Clusters at StarLight Connected via GEs over I-WIRE to Clusters at EVL
– DOT (Distributed Optical Testbed) at NU Connected via GEs over OMNInet
•
The National-Scale OptIPuter has been planned:
– Agreed to Connect SoCal to Chicago via Pacific Wave, NLR, and CA*net4
– A Terabyte RAID was Tested at UIC then Installed at StarLight for SIO data
•
International-scale OptIPuter has been achieved:

UvAmsterdam Installed a 64x64 Calient Switch at NetherLight
UIC Installed a 64x64 Glimmerglass Switch at EVL
Connected Lightpaths Through the 128x128 Calient Switch at StarLight

OptIPuter Chicago Year Three Plans:
National- and International-Scale OptIPuters
•
The Metro-Scale OptIPuter will be expanded:
– 30 Dual-Processor Opteron Cluster with 55 LCD Screens, 60TB Disk, 30 GE NICs
– 30 10GE NICs will be procured and switched through the Glimmerglass
– I-WIRE 10GE Wave to StarLight from EVL
•
The National-Scale OptIPuter:
– 10Gb Wavelength between SoCal and Chicago
– 8x1GE over CA*net4 (NYC/Chicago/Seattle) via User-Controlled Light Paths (UCLP)
– Create Demand as NLR Comes Up—Scientists will see OptIPuter Deployments
– 12TB RAID Storage and Clusters installed at StarLight based on SIO, USGS needs
•
International-Scale OptIPuter Experiments will be Continued via GLIF:
– NSF Euro-Link/TransLight OC-192 has 4 GEs Available for OptIPuter
– Dutch OC-192 to Chicago makes 10GE Available to Chicago (and beyond) now
– Clear Intent of Japanese Gigabit Network-II and UKLight to partner with OptIPuter
– Upgrading the Force10 Electronic Switch to 16x10GE + 96x1GE
•
No OptIPuter $$ for Equipment; Leveraged RI, RR, MRI Equipment Grants
•
