Blood in general? Types?
BLOOD: A LIQUID TISSUE
• Transportation: nutrients, wastes, heat
• Regulation: pH, temperature
• Protection: clot, disease, antibodies
Blood components
• 55% Plasma: 92% water;8% ions/proteins
• 45% Formed elements
– Erythrocytes (red blood cells) – 99%
– Leukocytes (white blood cells) – less 1%
– Platelets – less 1%
HEMATOCRIT
Erythrocytes
• Transports oxygen
(attached to
hemoglobin)
• Contains iron
• Lack a nucleus
• Outnumber WBCs
700 to 1
hemoglobin
• Iron-containing
protein (4)
• Transports oxygen (1
per iron)
Anemia…
• Decrease in the oxygen-carrying
capacity of blood.
• Causes:
–Excessive bleeding
–Iron deficiency
–Sickle-cell anemia
Leukocytes
• Important for defense (mobile army)
• Contain nuclei
• Can slip out of blood vessels
• Never (neutrophils)
• Let (lymphocytes)
• Monkeys (monocytes)
• Eat (eosinophils)
• Bananas (basophils)
question
• An increase in the number of WBCs
usually indicates……?
platelets
• Not true cells – but cell fragments
• Important for clotting
assignment
• List the types of white blood cells in
decreasing order of abundance in the
blood and for each type of white blood cell,
describe that cell’s function, the cell type
from which it differentiated from, and draw
a picture of that cell (paying attention to
the shape of the nucleus and size of cell)
