very hot.
• Magma are rocks that
melted.
• Magma is in “magma
chambers” far underground.
• But eventually, the magma
pushes upward and erupts
from cracks in the Earth’s
surface.
What does “erupt” mean?
• Erupt means to burst
out.
• An eruption can be
very strong or rather
gentle.
• Magma that erupts
out the Earth’s
surface is called
Lava.
How do volcanoes change the
Earth’s surface?
• Eventually, the hot lava
cools into solid rock.
• More lava on the Earth’s
surface forms a mountain
or another volcano.
• Each time a volcano
erupts, more lava
spreads over the volcano
and it gets taller and
taller.
• Volcanoes change the
Earth’s surface quickly.
• Some volcanoes are
formed under the
ocean.
• Hawaii and Japan are
groups of islands that
formed from volcanoes.
